How are you? Ready for a new track? It’s pretty prog rock/jazzy. In fact, it’s dirty and epic and FULL ON! And it’s already been getting heaps of spins on community radio!

It’s an instrumental called ‘A Cups’ and it was recorded in one take in my house by Cristian Barbieri. It features me on live looped Yamaha five-string electric violin and effects pedals and Justin Olsson on the drums.

‘A Cups’ is officially released tomorrow. But I couldn’t wait a minute more. I want you to head-bang out to it right now, tonight. Check it out here.

‘A Cups’ is about a flashback to when I was in my first few years of gigging at pubs and clubs. I was invited to join a bill featuring some of my favourite artists. When it was time for my set, one of the artists got on the mic and introduced me as: “just like Andrew Bird, but with boobs”. What? I felt awkward as hell and like I was about to get on stage with the audience either comparing me to Andrew Bird (who I sound nothing like, except that I also play the violin), or checking out my boobs! Or both. This is just one of many stories I have collected over the years about what it’s like to not be a man musician in our misogynistic music scene.

I’ll be playing this track live at my upcoming shows at The Tote Hotel on October 10th and at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival on October 21st. Have you got your tickets yet?

‘A Cups’ was actually first ever improvised on a Twitch stream way back in lockdown. I loved it so much that I re-worked it into the track you hear today. Please consider throwing a few dollars at it if you’re streaming it across platforms. It will help me to press this baby to vinyl once the full album is ready to go.

Plenty more ways to fill your heart and soul with music coming up very soon (including a little mini tour), but for now, turn it up to eleven and share it ’round the traps. ‘A Cups’ is yours.

I hope you love this new track as much as I enjoyed making it.

Love,

Xani x
