Australian music icon, Deborah Conway launched her autobiography and memoir “Book of Life” tonight.
Our senior photographer, Lord Murray from Peak Hour Images, was privileged to be in the room, shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Paul Kelly, Vika and Linda, Sigrid Thornton, Clare Bowditch and the MC for the night’s formalities, Caroline Wilson – a well-respected Australian journalist and childhood friend of Deborah’s.
In recognition of such a milestone, opening tomorrow, Arts Centre Melbourne in association with the Australian Music Vault have a very limited seasoned show featuring Deborah Conway and husband Willy Zygier in a finely crafted theatrical experience based on Conway’s highly anticipated memoir Book of Life, which was released by Allen and Unwin tonight, Tuesday 3 October 2023.
In the hour and half long show, songs from the Book of Life, written by both Conway and Zygier, explores their four-decade-long musical careers, told through eight scenes and eight songs.
Conway and Zygier play themselves as they reflect on their own story of youth, rebellion, falling in love, aging, money and music. Told with unflinching honesty, humour and revelation, learn the gritty details of an iconic woman who rocked the Australian music industry.
The Melbourne-based singer-songwriter has numerous accolades to her name including the 1992 ARIA Award for Best Female Artist, her album Bitch Epic reached the Top 20 in 1993, she was inducted into the 2019 National Live Music Awards Hall of Fame as a living legend followed by the 2022 Music Victoria Hall of Fame. A portrait of Conway, by Lewis Miller, was also a finalist in the 2022 Archibald Prize.
Featuring original music and theatrical storytelling, this unmissable tour-de-force is directed by Michael Kantor and choreographed by Stephanie Lake, with set design by Chloe Greaves and video design by Nick Roux.
