A movie lover’s paradise
Bringing the best in world cinema to Melbourne
Don’t miss some of the biggest international titles coming to MIFF 70. Feast your eyes on the top prize-winners, fresh and famous directors, familiar faces and far-flung places.
Making his long-awaited return to filmmaking following the smash hit Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller brings his mad genius to one of our major titles of the festival, Three Thousand Years of Longing. A delirious fable about a lovelorn djinn, this multilayered fantasia will leave fans of Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba cinematically ravished.
Tickets are on sale now for the 300+ films and special events in the festival program. Book yours now – MIFF arrives in cinemas on 4 August.
Mass
Two couples come together for a painful emotional reckoning in the aftermath of a school shooting in this acclaimed debut feature.
Held aloft by finely calibrated performances from an exceptional cast of theatre veterans – including Ann Dowd, who was nominated for a BAFTA for her portrayal – Mass develops a sensitive and sharp perspective on this most American of tragedies, which has garnered it praise and awards across the US.
The Humans
“Existential dread has rarely felt so intimate and visceral as in Stephen Karam’s directorial debut … A remarkably insightful and powerful portrait of the human condition.” – Hollywood Reporter
Beanie Feldstein, Steven Yeun, Richard Jenkins and Amy Schumer star in this unsettling ensemble drama about a family lunch that gets an existentialist horror spin.
Call Jane
Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver star as activists providing abortions and a lifeline to desperate women prior to Roe v. Wade.
Banks gives a career-best performance as a suburban lawyer’s wife, while Weaver shines as the leader of the underground Jane Collective in this Golden Bear–nominated drama from director Phyllis Nagy, the screenwriter of Carol.
On the Count of Three
“The film is so skillful at navigating the difficult topic at its center, you will almost miss the clever and necessary things it has to say about gun control, race, or even homosexuality.” – Observer (New York)
In this boldly bleak tragicomedy from rising star Jerrod Carmichael, two best friends decide today will be the day to end their lives.
Stars at Noon
“From the film’s bristling, dust-licked atmospherics to its frank, corporeal eroticism to yet another shivery, enveloping score by longtime collaborators Tindersticks, [Stars at Noon] is vintage Denis.” – Variety
Legendary French sensualist Claire Denis returns with a steamy, Cannes Grand Prix–winning romance-thriller starring Margaret Qualley and Joe Alwyn.
Illustrated Film Talks
Former London Film Festival and British Film Institute director Adrian Wootton OBE returns to MIFF for the 10th Melbourne instalment of his illustrious Illustrated Film Talks.
This year’s lectures celebrate the extraordinary lives and careers of four Hollywood legends: Cher, Elvis and David Bowie, plus Australia’s own Baz Luhrmann.
