Wohran’s new album Alterity is a testament to healing, recovery, and self-reckoning

Wohran‘s journey began in his mother’s car, when she used to drive him to kindergarten everyday. What stuck with him was the memory of 50 Cent, Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, blasting in the car. Flash forward to today, this was the spark that ignited the rapper’s creative path – a place he could always return to as he faced struggles with mental health and addiction.

Danish rapper and producer Wohran dropped his album, Alteritylast month. The record is a culmination of Wohran’s experiences and reflections, an arrival to self-reckoning. Alterity explores the range of emotions that arrive with mental health issues and addiction – and the record charts this journey of isolation, to the bravery that comes with daring to experience life in all its up and downs. With this, comes the challenges of leaving a familiar reality, in the hope that more is to come for him.

Carving his own space at the intersections of conscious rap and alternative hip-hop – Wohran’s distinctive sound finds its roots in personal experience and nostalgia.

Standout single ‘Clear’ represents, as the name suggests, a moment of clarity that came during the conception of this project. Wohran shares, “My roommate and I were in our little home studio just jamming, and coming up with melodies. He randomly played the guitar part in ‘Clear’. We didn’t use it, cause it didn’t fit the vibe of what we wanted, but I came back to it some time later, after a pretty tough day, and something just clicked.” He continues, “I wrote the entire song from the guitar sample alone. Then, I structured the instrumentation and drums around the lyrics. I didn’t mean to put it on the album at first, but something about it just stuck with me.”

Further on the single, Wohran says ‘Clear’ symbolised the start of a new chapter. Clear is a representation of the thoughts following your arrival at a point in life where one chapter has ended, but instead of seeing that point as an end, you see it as an opportunity for something better to replace it. It’s an affirmation of how the journey through the dark leads to light on the other side, as long as you keep walking.”
