VIA POLA Montepulciano – 2024 Riverina – $35.00

I always like to read Hand harvested on a wine label.
Why?  Because it means for me, in most cases smaller harvest and more care taken in handling the fruit than machine harvesting.
Talking to the winemaker at The Young Guns tasting this week about the 2024 vintage. This Montepulciano has received minimal oak treatment, resulting in a mid-weight wine with fruit-forward flavours that are rather juicy and offers a little complexity that will continue to improve in the bottle over the short term. However, it’s drinkable and ready to enjoy now!
While it shows dark fruit notes, it has some earthy and spicy notes wrapped around ripe plum flavours, showing Riverina heart, finishing with soft tannins and a slight rustic note that for me offered something a little different in the flavour profile that set this wine apart from the other Montepulciano’s on the day.

the Rot has set in.

The wine is described as the perfect pizza wine. However, I can’t get slow-cooked Greek lamb cutlets with mashed potatoes drizzled with homemade roast garlic sauce out of my mind.
