In the construction sector, exposed aggregate concrete has been there since long, but its prevalence has only begun in the last few years due to increased awareness among the consumers as well as builders. Moreover, it must be known that there are four types of exposed concrete, and a detailed understanding of them can be very helpful for any property owner. A plan can be made for installation so that the best can be selected depending on one’s suitability and choice.

  • Standard Aggregate – As the name implies, this type of exposed aggregate concrete is created by mixing aggregate into cement before laying it. The primary difference between the various types of aggregates is how they are mixed or placed with the cement to recreate the look. Making this type of aggregate may not be very easy, as a proper balance needs to be maintained between the aggregate and cement. It is because the component durability has to be improved or maintained at all times, and that is why the process can only be carried out by skilled workmen.
  • Topping Aggregate – It is an exposed aggregate concrete that needs a solid base of cement for holding it tightly. When the base starts drying up, the aggregate cement of about one to 1.5 inches is gradually poured on top of it in order to create the desired look. It is a type of technology that can be easier for an installer, as there can be more control to keep the thin layer regular at all places. Topping aggregate is very much in use at many places used to produce the needed surface.
  • Seeded Aggregate – For every perfectionist who needs a superb exposed aggregate concrete finish, this type of concrete can be the best way forward. In this type of process, the aggregates are planted into the concrete while it is still in the wet condition. The aggregates are placed one by one into the surface by manual labor. Therefore, a final finish can be pre-decided while placing the aggregates in order to create the desired look.
  • Polished Aggregate – It can be one of the best options for indoor areas, as polished aggregate is not a type of non-skid surface. The initial preparations for this type of exposed aggregate concrete are quite similar to that of standard or topping aggregate, but a dazzling finish is achieved by using a grinder or sander to peel off the top layer by a few inches. A clear coat can then be applied on it several times to produce the needed shine. People who prefer a dull matte finish can stay satisfied with this option, as it will not need any further coating on it.
