The fruit is from a vineyard believe to be around 140 years of age.
I got a slight whiff of Gum leaves on the initial first sniff followed by sweet late Autumn violets that I loved and was not really expecting.
Remembering that this wine is now 9 years old it dawned on me that this Mataro was now showing some bottle age and the promise of things to come.
In the mouth: A touch of blackberry with a lighter lavender wash flowing across the palate once again a hint of herby sweetness and a lovely acid finish with well-balanced tannins to this medium meaty flavoured wine.
I was told that it had a number of years ahead to reveal its full potential and I only hope I have the willpower to wait!
Keeping in mind the blackberry fruit flavours of this medium-body wine I decided to have lamb shanks cooked in red wine, a splash of stout and winter vegetables. served on a bed of creamy massed potatoes.
For some reason hints of liquorice now started to show, the difference food can make to a glass of wine.
