Amid the rapid gentrification and increased crime of Melbourne’s iconic St Kilda district, where old-world charm meets new development, one institution has remained a steadfast pillar of the local live music scene: The Vineyard. Defying the pressures of tourism, changing neighbourhood dynamics, and the increasingly built-up landscape, The Vineyard Bar and Restaurant not only survives but continues to evolve as one of Melbourne’s most cherished or sympathetic music venues. And like a good cask of aging wine, it gets better with time.
Since its inception, The Vineyard has been more than just a venue—it’s a cultural touchstone in the heart of St Kilda. In an era where many beloved local venues have come and gone, The Vineyard’s commitment to fostering an authentic live music experience has helped it endure, providing a platform for both rising stars and established icons.
Over the years, the venue has hosted an eclectic mix of talent, from international superstars to treasured local musicians including global names such as Mark Ronson, Cyprus Hill, Buena Vista Social Club, The Dandy Warhols, James Brown’s band, Jef Martin ex-Canadian Tea Party. And varied Australian artists such as hip-hop trailblazer Baker Boy, First Nations digeridoo players including Will Burton and Mem Tjampitjinpa, Mark Seymour, Briony Dawson, Deborah Conway, Freddie Negro and so many more. Recently it has established South Side’s only true rap night and plays host to Chi Wow Wah Town’s inner-city debuts that push the boundaries of electronic music. All this cements the venue’s place as a critical hub for emerging and established local talent and international acts.
“The Vineyard has always been more than just a music venue – it’s been a sanctuary for artists and music lovers alike for 26 years and acts as an incubator of emerging talents” says Johnny Iodice, owner of The Vineyard and pioneer of St Kilda’s live music scene that shifted the impetus of music from the big pub scene filtering it through to smaller boutique bars. The venue is also a popular social hub for emerging artists. “We’ve watched many young talents evolve out of the local scene, starting on our stage and moving on in other bands that go out to take on the challenge of emerging to national recognition, like Briony Dawson for example, and Cat Empire. That’s a testament to the power of live music and the community that supports it.”
“It’s become our home, a place where the hip-hop community feels safe. It has given our artists the opportunity to express themselves authentically, especially by supporting women and youth in finding their voices. This is essential, and the Vineyard provides the platform to make it happen.” says Katija Burcul, founder of Ripe Hop.
While many venues have struggled with rising rents and the challenges posed by tourism and rapid urban development, The Vineyard has remained firmly in place, providing an intimate and authentic live music experience that continues to draw both locals and visitors. Its ability to adapt while maintaining its unique character ensures it remains a vital part of St Kilda’s cultural fabric.
“St Kilda has always been a place of artistic expression and diversity, and The Vineyard embodies that spirit,” adds Johnny Iodice. “We are proud to have played a part in shaping Melbourne’s musical landscape over the years, and as we look to the future, we’re excited to continue evolving with the times while keeping the essence of what makes The Vineyard special intact.”
With an ever-growing calendar of live performances, spanning genres from indie rock to hip hop, and a menu that celebrates Melbourne’s dynamic food scene, The Vineyard continues to offer something for everyone—whether you’re a music aficionado, a food lover, or simply someone looking for an unforgettable night out. The Vineyard stands as a testament to the enduring power of live music and community. It’s a place where the pulse of St Kilda’s artistic soul continues to beat, and where music fans can still experience the raw magic of an intimate live performance, just as they did decades ago.
