BELL’s HOTEL, corner Moray and Clrendon Streets, South Melbourne is another old established drinking pub which has several different forms of musical entertainment. Wednesday is country music with Saltbush residency. Fridau is disco and Saturday is Jazz.
The venue room is a recent edition built on the Moray Street side of the pub. Atmospherically it is very much quiet a laid back place with music added. The decor is early colonial, all dark wood and floor to ceiling latticed windows, and there’s a garden spotlit at night. “Wall to wall” and table and chairs to seat about 100 people, you walk into the room straight off the footpath. The bar is at the back with a smorgasbord arrangement on the right wall.
a $2 cover charge is asked when you buy your first drink. (The bartender must have a good eye for new faces.) Bell’s does not have a stage, but being a relatively small room this doesn’t make a deal of difference to visability or sound, maybe just to the presentation of the acts.
This is not a rock n’ roll venue with lots of action., sweat and broken glass, but if you want a relaxed, pleasant night’s listening to country music and jazz, it’s a great pub…
