Brighton’s School Disco return with “Happen”, released via Krautpop!, a sprawling, hypnotic single that cements their reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting purveyors of modern psychedelia. Fusing prog, krautrock, and psych-rock, the track is among the band’s most complete and ambitious work to date, an ominous yet tender journey that showcases both their musicianship and emotional depth.
Tracked live at Farm Road Studios with minimal overdubs, “Happen” thrives on raw intensity. Its fluid structure drifts from floating verses into fuzz-heavy guitar breaks and shifting time signatures before exploding into a relentless, angular instrumental climax. The result is both expansive and immersive, as reminiscent of Meddle-era Pink Floyd as it is of CAN, Black Sabbath, King Crimson, or modern psych titans like Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.
Lyrically sparse but weighted with emotion, the song finds vocalist and guitarist Rory Lethbridge channelling both personal reflection and the band’s experimental spirit. Originally written and recorded in a single day for a live lathe-cut release, “Happen” quickly grew into something bigger: a line in the sand between School Disco’s past and their next chapter. “It felt like the start of a new chapter,” says Lethbridge, describing the song as both a creative reset and a bold step forward.
Already known for their high-octane live shows, supporting Wolf Alice, Lime Garden, Froth, Bo Ningen, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, the band have carved out a cult following through restless creativity and uncompromising live energy.
At once brooding and transcendent, “Happen” is the first glimpse into a new body of work. It finds School Disco leaning harder into heavy psych jams, expansive soundscapes, and progressive experimentation, crafting a sound that’s as unpredictable as it is captivating.
