say yes to sustainable fashion at rags to runway: great southern styleSustainable fashion will be at the forefront this spring with Kangan Institute to host the Rags to Runway: Great Southern Style fashion show on 4 September in collaboration with Australian Red Cross.

Part of Melbourne Fashion Week 2018, the show will feature unique collections made by fashion design students using recycled garments donated from Australian Red Cross. In line with this year’s theme, Great Southern Style, the designs will be inspired by the Australian landscape, flora and fauna, Indigenous culture and iconic Australian fashion designers past and present. Now in its third year, Kangan Institute’s Rags to Runway program addresses growing environmental and ethical concerns about textiles manufacturing and waste in the fashion industry. The program challenges Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising (MST50116) students to rethink how and where materials are sourced for work, and to explore creative ways to reinvigorate recycled materials.

“We are proud to join hands with Australian Red Cross to work towards a sustainable fashion future. Our Rags to Runway program prepares our students for dynamic careers where they can make positive and responsible contributions to the fashion industry as a whole,” said Trevor Schwenke, CEO of Kangan Institute.

“This year’s fashion show will showcase our students’ skills and creativity, and hopefully inspire our communities to reconsider upcycling as a stylish and sustainable fashion alternative. I’d encourage anyone interested in fashion to join us at the show.”

Andre Oosthuizen, General Manager Retail Services at Red Cross said the Australian Red Cross was thrilled to support a new generation of designers in transforming pre-loved fashion into runway pieces.

“Our Red Cross Shops support a reduce, reuse and recycle philosophy, and it’s an honour to partner with Kangan Institute students on this fashion forward sustainability initiative, encouraging people to think differently about how they design and shop.”
