    FURY

    By Joanna Murray-Smith

Directed by Brett Cousins & Ella Caldwell

    29 May – 1 July

    Victorian premiere

Red Stitch presents the Victorian premiere of Fury by Joanna Murray-Smith.

Alice and Patrick are conscientious and thoughtful, educated and open minded; and that’s how they’ve raised their son, Joe. One evening, Joe’s teacher arrives to tell them that Joe is in trouble. Detained by police, he has committed an act of vandalism – against the local mosque.

In this story of suburban extremism, the most terrifying explosions are the ones within families as children and parents fight to survive the truth about each other. How well do we know our children and how deep is our responsibility for them and to them? And in the trenches of a privileged family’s life, what is fury — a force for evil or a force for good?

This provocative new work will be co-directed by Brett Cousins and Ella Caldwell – the creative duo behind last season’s critically acclaimed Incognito. Fury features Danielle Carter, Chris Connelly, Shayne Francis, Joe Petruzzi, Dushan Philips and Sean Rees – Wemyss. With set and costume design by Chloe Greaves, composition by THE SWEATS and lighting design by Kris Chainey.

Joanna Murray-Smith is one of Australia’s most prolific playwrights. With more than 20 plays to her name, they have been performed by some of the world’s leading actors including: Annette Bening, Meryl Streep, Laura Linney, Dame Eileen Atkins, Dame Diana Rigg, Corin Redgrave, Sam Waterston, Iain Glen and John Slattery. Her plays include, Switzerland, Pennsylvania Avenue, Fury, True Minds, Songs for Nobodies, Day One – A Hotel – Evening, American Song, The Gift, Rockabye, The Female of the Species, Ninety, Bombshells, Rapture, Nightfall, Redemption, Flame, Love Child, Atlanta, Honour, and Angry Young Penguins.
