THE Truth is I Don’t Think I Will Do This Wine Justice; as describing the flavours of this wine just don’t seem to be enough to get excited about and the wine is both different and exciting.
The grapes used are Carricante grown in the ancient volcanic soils of Mount Etna. Where to start, A Puddara is a Carricante cru for DOC white wine called Bianco, grown in Sicily half way up the rocky slopes of a volcano called Mt Etna. What I experienced from this wine the first time I tried it around 3 years ago was it could be drank quite warm not a great chill needed at all. And the wine took 2 to 3 days to open up and show is self.
This time around I gave the wine a little chill and it still got better over 2 days. A ‘Puddara is fermented entirely in large barrels, according to ancient Etna custom for the vinification of Carricante. Product in Santa Maria di Licodia, south slope of Etna, 900 meters above sea level. It is an authentic mountain wine with flavours that you will not get from any other wine. This time with 4 years down the track and a little bottle age the wine has blossomed with the colour of golden straw, there is a smokey ash mineral hint that runs throughout this wine from the nose to the plate.
The wine finishes crisp with acid (not overpowering) wild pear laced with stunning flint and mineral notes. The reason I originally tried his wine, I read on the web that it ages well and can taste like a good white Burgundy at half the price. And they are right with all its minerals and flint and pear hints I would be happy drinking this all day long.
I had a home cooked Italian dish of chunky white fish pieces on crushed oven roasted potatoes sprinkled with a little fresh Thyme. The wine worked well with the fish and crispy crushed potatoes. (Rustic to say the least. But old world food works best with an old world wine.)
