About The Butterfield Collection

We have been generously gifted English architect William Butterfield’s original drawings of St. Paul’s Cathedral.

These to-scale drawings – some up to six metres long – were provided as plans for the local builders as they brought the distinctive Gothic Revival designs to life.

They tell a fascinating story that helped shape one of the busiest intersections in the country and forever changed Melbourne’s cityscape.

The drawings are now close to 150 years old and in a perilously fragile state.

Our 2022 Appeal is raising funds to help conserve these extraordinary works and make them available to all Victorians now, and in the future.
