At the eastern end of the Loire Valley in France sit the two communes of Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé, where arguably the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world is produced.
If you are a fan of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, there is a strong chance you may not get Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé, as they are vastly different in flavour and texture. (Thank God)
In the glass: Bright, clear straw in colour.
On the nose: The first thing I looked for was the smoke, and in all honest,y I got a slight flint and mineral note washed with grapefruit and green apples. Not quite what I was expecting; Having said that, I haven’t drunk a real Pouilly-Fumé for a while.
In the mouth: This is where Pouilly-Fumé exceeds all before it. Apples and minerality, and fresh flint-like minerality, fill the mouth with hints of citrus acid finishing with both wet and dry chalky notes.
PS. I’m not a fan of Sauvignon Blanc; However I love this stuff. I enjoyed this wine with what God intended; Fresh oysters and a crusty French baguette heavy on the butter.
