Playtime Staged Readings

A sampler of theatre probing queer themes

Playtime is an exceptional initiative by Gasworks Arts Park and Midsumma Festival to identify, support and develop new talent to portray relevant queer issues on stage for mainstream audiences to consider and enjoy.  On 17 January excerpts from four new plays will be performed, discussed and voted on by a panel and live audience.

One work will be selected by an industry panel and audience feedback to go on to receive support and development to become a full scale work and be presented at Midsumma 2019.

The shortlisted plays are:

Pink Triangles
Jayden Walker

Pink Triangles tells the true story Heinz Heger, who was imprisoned in a Nazi Concentration camp for being homosexual, and the injustices he continued to face post war.

Body
Jessica McKerlie

Body, a comedic look at how a non-binary human interacts with and interprets feelings from inside a body that doesn’t always feel like home.

The Natural Disaster
MKA Theatre of New Writing

A contemporary adaptation of the first Surrealist text, Apollinaire’s 1903 play ‘The Breasts of Tiresias’.  The play is a subversive and political queer comedy that inverts Greek myth to tell the story of Therese – a woman who leaves her husband, changes her sex, and takes over the world.

Become The One
Adam Fawcett

An intense look at the budding romance between a closeted bisexual footballer and a young queer man, Become The One examines our toxic culture of masculinity and the circumstances from which it might be broken.

Playtime is one night of thrilling new theatre each year that is proud to substantially contribute to the development of high quality theatre from Australias diverse LGBTQIA+ community.  A community full of stories and ideas that deserve to be heard on the stages of performing arts venues throughout the country.
