Is this one of the best examples of Nebbiolo in Australia?
I personally think the entire range of Pipan Steel Nebbiolos are certainly amongst the better Australian Nebbiolos I have tasted this year.
Believe me, I get to taste a lot of Nebbiolo. More than most people, as I hunt down all that I can find both the new world and the old world such is my passion for this grape variety.
Tesoro is a blend of all three clones used in the vineyard. The resulting wine has aromatics of bitumen with a savoury herbal hint that moves on to fuller darker fruit as the wine opens up, as it flows effortlessly across the palate a flirtatious yet bold wine.
At six years of age, this is drinking well, with velvet-like tannins and savoury earthy notes with a touch of cola on the nose, all filling the mouth and ending with a rich almost dusty drying finish.
Yet, another Pipan Steel wine that hints at Italy in a cheeky Australian way.
All three wines from Pipan Steel have been miles apart in flavour, body and structure. Yet all are grown in the same vineyard from the same grape verity drawing attention to different personalities of the clones used and the skill of the winemaker to craft a thing of beauty.
I enjoyed this wine with a Truffle and Parmesan Risotto. The rich wine blended into the cheese as the silky tannins conquered the creamy rice dotted with black truffle slices.
