pica announces $50,000 schenberg art fellowship recipients for 2022

PICA is pleased to announce the winners of the Schenberg Art Fellowship, which is presented in partnership with the University of Western Australia to outstanding Hatched artists. Over thirteen years the Fellowship has grown to a substantial $50,000. In 2022 and for the first time in Hatched’s thirty-one-year history, the award has been split into three separate awards, allowing more talented artists the opportunity to advance their practices through this vital financial support.

  • Schenberg Art Fellowshipof $35,000,the largest prize for an emerging artist in Australiahas been awarded to Erin Hallyburton, a graduate of Monash University.
  • Schenberg Art High Commendationof $10,000 has been awarded to Remy Faint, a graduate of University of New South Wales.
  • Schenberg Art Commendation of $5,000 has been awarded to Ilona McGuire, a graduate of Curtin University.

The Schenberg Art Fellowship of $35,000 has been awarded to one exceptional Hatched artist to further invest in their career. The Schenberg Art Commendations have been awarded to two outstanding Hatched artists to recognise their work and encourage the development of their practices. PICA is pleased to be working with The University of Western Australia on these significant awards for emerging artists, made possible by funds bequeathed to The University of Western Australia by Dr Harold Schenberg.

The announcement of this major investment in the burgeoning career of three Australian artists was made at the Hatched National Graduate Show 2022 opening event at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA), Friday 13 May.

Erin, Remy and Ilona were selected from a pool of 61 of the most promising emerging artists nationally for inclusion in the exhibition, which closes on Sunday 17 July. This is the thirteenth year that PICA has worked with the University of Western Australia (UWA) and the UWA Cultural Precinct to present the Schenberg Art Fellowship.

In its 31st year, Hatched features 25 of the most promising artists from Australia’s leading art schools and universities from every state and territory in Australia. Works on display feature a broad range of contemporary practice including installations, audio/sound works, photography, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and media works.

The judges of this year’s Fellowship were Amy Barrett-Lennard, Director, PICA; Justine Ambrosio, Manager, Engagement and Education, Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery; and Michael Bianco, Director, Bunbury Regional Art Gallery. The judges felt that Erin’s work was an extremely sophisticated engagement with materiality, process and form. They commented, ‘Her use of waste oils and fats elicit a visceral response from viewers, in a refined and intriguing exploration of identity, class and the immigrant experience. Erin’s exquisitely paired back installation tests our perceptions of fatness through the mutability of her materials, and their relation to our own bodies.’
