panel talk: craft, expression, identity: craft contemporary, 16 octoberThis October, Boroondara Arts presents Craft Contemporary, celebrating the multifaceted art of craft. As part of this program, participants can take part in a Panel Talk with artists Sai-Wai Foo, Aaron Billings, Tantri Mustika, and Chenai Mupotsa-Russell, on Saturday 16 October, via Zoom.

In light of their creative practices and lived experiences, the artists will discuss topics such as, “What does our craft-making say about us? What does our creative practice allow us to express? How does this form our individual identity in society?”

Sai-Wai Foo (pictured right) recently appeared on Channel 10’s Making It Australia*, and is a Malaysian-born Chinese, Naarm/Melbourne-based early-career artist. Her training in fashion design influences and informs her practice through technique, finish and materials. Sai-Wai is a Bricoleur who collects discarded and redundant items and gives them a new life through her sculptural practice.

Tantri Mustika is a Melbourne-based ceramicist who makes a range of unique and colourful ceramics. Tantri’s current collections of work incorporate the use of meticulously hand-stained and marbled clays that mimic characteristics of natural stones. This technique combined with age-old hand-building methods and unexpected use of colour, come together to create a collection of sophisticated, yet exciting forms that can be used and admired in everyday life.

Aaron Billings
is a comic and textile artist working out of Pink Ember studio in Coburg, specialising in embroidery, screen printing, repairing and reforming. Chenai Mupotsa-Russell (pictured left) is the founder of Rainbow Muse and board member of Mossfolk. Chenai works in Mental Health and Art therapy, coming from a background in Community Development.

Craft Contemporary presents an entire month of online events, workshops, exhibitions, and panel discussions to celebrate the art of craft. The program boasts events for all ages and experience levels, inviting guests to make, create, see and do, with guidance from some of Australia’s most revered crafters and experts.

Boroondara Arts deliver a curated collection of exhibitions, live music performances, workshops and screenings online, at Hawthorn Arts Centre, Town Hall Gallery and throughout Boroondara. So many reasons to stay connected, spark your imagination and enjoy the arts in Boroondara. For more information about our upcoming opportunities, activities and events, please visit boroondara.vic.gov.au/arts.
