World Music Finalist Michael Cristiano bridges cultures with bold leap into Latin Rock

Internationally acclaimed producer, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Cristiano has captivated a whole new audience with the recent release of a Spanish-language version of one of his standout Italian songs from his celebrated album ‘Mai Finirà’. This exciting reinterpretation marks Michael Cristiano’s first foray into the Latin rock/Rock en Español genre, an ambitious artistic evolution that highlights his multicultural roots and global musical vision.

Following the success of ‘Mai Finirà’, which has garnered widespread international radio support and critical acclaim, Cristiano continues to push creative boundaries. Last week, Michael Cristiano was announced an Intercontinental Music Awards finalist for the category of World Music, with three tracks making the cut: ‘Sangue Tricolore’, ‘Oggi No‘ and ‘È Tutta Una Poesia’.

Now with this Spanish adaptation, crafted with the same passion, lyrical depth, and musical craftsmanship that define his work, Michael Cristiano aims to bridge cultures and emotions through the universal language of music.

A seasoned producer known for his decades of work with legends like The Seekers, Judith Durham, and Russell Morris, Michael Cristiano once again takes the reins on all aspects of this single release: vocals, instrumentation, and production. ‘Espero Que Te Quiera‘ is a bold step into Latin rock’s vibrant, percussive world.

Michael Cristiano’s ‘Espero Que Te Quiera‘ was released on Friday, 4 July, and is now available across all major streaming platforms. Read on to learn what Michael Cristiano had to say about this moment in his award-winning career.

Congratulations on your upcoming Spanish release! What inspired you to translate one of your Italian songs into Spanish, and why now?

As part of my classical guitar studies, required learning were many pieces by famed Spanish composers like Tárrega, Sor, Rodrigo and Aguado and this led to my appreciation of Spanish music, especially flamenco. I became very interested in the language and its similarities to the Italian language. Like Italian, it is a very romantic, passionate language as is the music and the uniquely Spanish concept of ‘duende’ (which is a heightened state of emotion, expression and authenticity) always intrigued me. I started singing in Spanish in my early twenties when I played in a Latin show band and quickly learnt the subtleties in pronunciation from the drummer in the band who was born in Madrid.

I have had the idea of recording a song in Spanish for a long time and the successful release of my Italian album ‘Mai Finirà’ inspired me to translate the first track from the album. It is titled ‘Espero Que Te Quiera’ and will be released on July 4 on all streaming platforms.

Many artists such as Sting, Nek and Laura Pausini, to name just a few, have released material translated into the Spanish language so I am in good company.

The Italian and Spanish languages both carry deep emotional resonance. How did the meaning or emotion of the song evolve during the translation process?

Both Italian and Spanish are very passionate and emotive languages. I found it relatively easy to sing the song in theSpanish language and to convey a sense of intent and emotion. The meaning of the song is identical in both languages.

You’ve often spoken about your Italian heritage influencing your musical expression. Do you feel a similar cultural or emotional connection to Spanish-language music?

Yes, as I mentioned earlier, Spanish music has been part of my life since I started my classical guitar studies so I immersed myself in the culture. I visited Spain a few years ago and saw many flamenco performances which I loved. I have also been a fan of various Spanish pop artists over the years so I felt it was a natural progression to release my music to the Spanish speaking world, which is not only Spain but Mexico, South America, the Philippines and many other countries.

Which Italian song from ‘Mai Finirà‘ have you chosen to reimagine in Spanish, and what made this track the ideal for translation?

The song I chose to translate from my album ‘Mai Finirà’ is ‘Spero Che Ti Vuole’, the Spanish title being ‘Espero Que Te Quiera’. I knew that this song would work well in the translation as the chorus had the same phrasing as the Italian version and that really is the ‘hook’ of the song. Not all songs work well when translated but this one seemed to be the perfect fit.

As an artist based in Melbourne with strong Italian roots, how has the multicultural scene in Australia shaped or supported your genre-crossing journey?

I have had such wonderful support here in Australia and that support has been crucial in the success of my album.

I would especially like to thank Radio Italiana 531, Radio Italia Uno, 5EBI and Rete Italia for getting behind the album since it’s release. The multicultural music scene needs these media outlets to help it grow and flourish and they do a brilliant job in that regard. I am thrilled that my album is reaching audiences in Australia as well as the incredible success it’s having internationally.

You’ve worn many hats – producer, composer, arranger, and performer across music in English and Italian. Did stepping into the Rock en Espanol space require you to work differently in any of those roles?

I am very excited about stepping into the Rock en Español genre and I found singing in Spanish quite comfortable and organic. I didn’t really need to change any of my creative processes in recording these new tracks. I did have some help in refining my pronunciation, though there were only some very slight changes I had to make in my vocal delivery.

What has your Italian-speaking audience’s response been like for your album ‘Mai Finirà’? Are you hoping to reach a new audience with this Spanish-language track?

My Italian-speaking audience’s response for ‘Mai Finirà’ has been nothing short of amazing! The album’s been played across the globe featuring on Italian American Radio with one of the tracks, ‘Oggi No’, making the Top 10 on the Euro Indie Charts and broadcast across more than 60 countries. I am thrilled that it’s having such a huge reach internationally.

Will this be a one-off experiment, or do you see a future where you release more music in Spanish?

Singing in Spanish is definitely something I would like to continue doing, in fact I have another Spanish-language song due for release on August 15. This is another song translated from the album and it is titled ‘Es Todo Un Poema’. I think audiences will particularly love this one as it features lots of Spanish/classical guitar and much ‘duende’. I have also begun writing songs for a new Italian album due for release in 2026.

Finally, what do you hope listeners – new and longtime – feel when they hear your voice in Spanish for the first time?

I hope listeners will find the same emotion and feeling in my voice when they hear the Spanish versions of my songs. Audiences have often mentioned that it is those qualities in my voice that they love and what makes me unique in style as an artist. This is me stretching my creative wings and hopefully my fans will appreciate my creative endeavours and come along on the journey.

Stream ‘Espero Que Te Quiera’ now on Spotify & Apple Music, and follow Michael Cristiano on his journey as he continues with this Australian music first.
