A play about suicide that needs to be seen

Marooned

Review by Harriet Cunningham
★★★½

“Is it only last week Australian of the Year Grace Tame told us, “History, lived experience, the whole truth, unsanitised and unedited, is our greatest learning resource. It is what informs social and structural change”? Marooned is a play that fulfils this urgent purpose, using communal story-telling, aka theatre, to confront Australia’s epidemic of life-threatening despair, shame and grief. It does so with humour and compassion and honesty. It needs to be seen.

The beauty of the play is that it is so easy to stage and tour. Its set comprises of two benches. And lighting is simple. If we need to we can even supply our own lights.

This is why we are interested in hiring Halls: Mechanic institutes, Town Halls and or Mason Halls.

Each of the characters’ stories represents a different group in our community, but all reveal how delicate is the human psyche, how fragile is our mental health and how tenuous our grip on this life.

Marooned is a revolution in Suicide Prevention because it entertains and holds an audience’s attention, and while it powerfully conveys its message it manages to leave you feeling uplifted.

~Army Psychologist LTCOL Andy Cohn

“This is an important play,”

~Alan Hopgood. Playwright

“While I can see the influences of Harold Pinter, this is not Pinter. This is an original voice. And Marooned is a marvellous play. A clever and engaging work. Highly original & witty.”

~Bruce Beresford Director

I laughed, I cried, I felt. It’s raw and extremely real. The actors are beyond amazing, the writing is phenomenal. It was an occasional shifting of bodies that brought you back to the reality that reminded you that this was a play.

~Natalie Powel

I think it’s fair to say that any play that holds your attention for 90 minutes is something special. Having been in the audience, I can tell you this is that play. Miss it at your peril.

~Simon Walters

Thoroughly enjoyed this yesterday. If you get the chance recommended very highly. Funny, touching and poignant. Great performances by all involved.

~Brian Molony

It’s refreshing honest and raw – yet uplifting. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this on the topic of suicide. Fantastic script and performances.

~Marie Budimir

Brilliant is all I can say. It’s a story that needs to be told and everyone needs to see it.

~Charlie Heylar

A fantastic play dealing with “Life issues”. Entertaining, funny, sad, and thoughtful. Not to be missed!

~Damien Mecoles

What an absolutely brilliant show. Fantastic actors, superbly written. The cast, writer and everyone associated with Marooned thoroughly deserved their standing ovation and extended applause.

A great theatre experience.

~Jeffrey Byrant Jones

Cannot say how much I enjoyed it. Beautifully written. Brilliantly acted. I laughed, I cried and I pondered. A truly wonderful piece of work.

~Deb Mitchell

“This is A really important play”

~Elise Anderson

“A superb play. The Script is absolutely amazing.”

~Maria O’Sullivan

In 90 minutes the play opens a crowd up and gets them warmly and proactively talking about suicide.  They often hang around for ages.

Invite your Local Community’s Mental Health Professionals to be there and they can mingle with this crowd, informing them of the services that are available and to talk.

It is a positive breeding ground for ideas and change.

Because we aren’t required to tour a set, and because the play can be staged anywhere from a theatre to a small hall, even outside, we can keep costs low.

The cost is only affected by your community’s distance from Melbourne.

We also recommend two shows.  We have found that the braver audience members come to the first show, then tell the rest, “To go see it, it’s great.”

This is why the second show is generally busier.

THE SYDNEY SHOW CROWDS

  1. The goal, to write a suicide prevention play that was cheap to stage and tour,
  2. That held an audience’s attention and entertained them.
  3. That left them feeling uplifted, even hopeful,
  4. And in times of darkness might see them choose life.
