listen to older voices: val waller – part 1

Welcome to Listen To Older Voices, a program produced by Rob Greaves and podcast through the Toorak Times and Tagg

Even though COVID restrictions are relaxing, face to face interviews with older people was still not possible at this time, so we continue to dip into our Vault of Treasured memories for some of our memorable past programs.

This is the first part of a 3-part program featuring the Life and Times of Val Waller. When this interview was first conducted in July of 2009, Val was 74 years of age.

Born in 1935, Val’s story is not only interesting it is well told, very much in the style of traditional storytelling. She is able to recall quite clearly events in her life stretching right back to the age of three.

Loosing her father at an early age when he died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Sandakan, was an event that had an incredibly traumatic effect upon her mother whilst proving to be one of the saddest moments of Val’s life.

We learn that Val’s mother was a very kind woman and it is easy to conclude as we listen to her story, that much of her mother had rubbed off on Val.

In this first program Val takes us on a journey of memories through her early life. Wanting to be a nurse she actually ended up working at the Commonwealth bank and how this came about is only part of the many stories she shares.

Part 1 of her story ends with Val sharing the story of how she became an airline hostess with the Australia airline, TAA. This story alone is worth listening to.
