Welcome to Listen To Older Voices, a program produced by Rob Greaves for Uniting Melba and podcast through the Toorak Times and Tagg.
Listen To Older Voices presents the stories, views and opinions of our older citizens. It is predominantly in a life & times format, with interviewees reflecting upon their lives from earliest memories. An underlying principle of the program is to promote the concept of positive ageing, reinforcing the principle that older people have & continue to make a valuable contribution to both their local & wider community.
In Part 2 of the story of Patricia Smith, we find her and husband Roy in Australia where they eagerly grabbed all the opportunities presented to them and carved out a wonderful life. In fact having children and developing some close friendships all was going well, until Roy passes away as a result of ill health bought on by excessive drinking. Pat makes it clear that despite his drinking Roy was a wonderful, caring and loving husband and makes the point that his drinking was bought on by his wartime experiences and a lack of support after the war.
Dealing with his passing, Pat works hard and finds a job working with disabled young people, a job that she thoroughly enjoyed. Part of her story includes the tale of her returning to the UK for a holiday and while she enjoyed it, it is her life in Australia that comes across as most important to her.
