Welcome to Listen To Older Voices, a program produced Rob Greaves for Wesley Mission Victoria and podcast through the Toorak Times.
Listen To Older Voices presents the stories, views and opinions of our older citizens. It is predominantly in a life & times format, with interviewees reflecting upon their lives from earliest memories. An underlying principal of the program is to promote the concept of positive ageing, reinforcing the principle that older people have & continue to make a valuable contribution to both their local & wider community.
Welcome to the second of the 3-part program featuring the story of Mary Davenport. Born in August 1920, it is obvious that Mary owes much to her grandmother, who had very strong beliefs that women should receive a good education and set about making certain that’s just what mary received. This is taken for granted today, but really her grandmother’s beliefs were way ahead of her time and as a result Mary received a very good education.
Mary is a well-spoken, vivacious and intelligent woman and these qualities come through constantly. During this part of her story we learn how she met and married Frank Davenport, who was a soldier, and we learn how she was proposed to within a week of meeting him. As Mary says, because of the war “you worked fast and grabbed them while you could get them.”
