Following their sell-out performances of The Doors’ L.A. Woman, Hugo and the Spirit return to The Tote performing their recent album Star Birth / Star Death, all their shows in Melbourne and surrounding towns packed out in early 2021 – The Tote show promises to be an event to remember.
Nitestylz, Germany: “Imagine a love child of Babylon Zoo, Beck, the deepest, trippiest outings of the Stereo MC’s in their ‘Connected’-era mixed in with the haunted souls of early The Crystal Method and the spirit of Tricky in his absolute heydays as well as good portion of dusty, classic and down-to-earth (Desert)Rock to get an idea what this (Star Birth) all about. Essential goodness.”

THE FREES:
The Frees’ (John and Meaghan Free, ex-Penthouse, Gin Palace) ‘nasty woman’ vocals shine a fearsome spotlight on grim realities, while electric guitar chills to the bone as this intense performance duo provides a harrowing mid-apocalypse soundtrack to late-stage capitalism’s self-wrought societal and ecological collapse, pouring their grief and rage into work described as “outstandingly bleak but hauntingly beautiful”.

John Free was also at various times a member of the bands Country Teasers (Crypt/In The Red), Quickspace (Domino/Matador), and The Cesarians, made guitars for and recorded with Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray at NY Hed studio, and gave several collaborative performances with Lydia Lunch  and supported bands such as The Fall, Dirty Three, Rev. Horton Heat & The Damned, Link Wray & The Acemen, Thee Headcoats, Bob Log III & Gallon Drunk, The Kills Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Spiritualized, The Black Keys…
