Interview – Tim Vicia

As an emerging artist carving out their own space in the music world, Tim Vicia has been on a journey of self-discovery and sonic exploration. From experimenting with the playful simplicity of Soundtrap to crafting the emotionally resonant tracks that define their signature “Dreamo” style, every step has shaped a unique musical voice. In his latest release, “Allein unter Vielen”, Tim Vicia delves into the universal feeling of being surrounded by people yet feeling profoundly alone, transforming personal experience into a song that is both intimate and relatable. In this conversation, they open up about vulnerability, creative evolution, and the delicate balance between melancholy and pop, giving listeners a glimpse into the heart behind the music.

How would you describe your artistic evolution leading up to “Allein unter Vielen”?

I’m still a very small artist and quite unknown. 🙂 Nevertheless: In the early days, I was in search for my own sound. At that time, I used this crazy DAW called ‘Soundtrap’. It was very easy to handle, but the results were kind of weak. Nowadays, I approach the matter of songwriting in a completely different way and I’m hardly able to listen to my very first songs. I gained experience in writing songs and when it came to “Allein unter Vielen” I knew better what I want and what I don’t.

What’s the story behind the title “Allein unter Vielen”?

Allein unter Vielen (‘Alone among many’) describes the feeling you can have, when you’re surrounded by people, but you still feel alone. Imagine everybody knows each other but you’renew there. A foreign subject. That’s the main idea behind the song and it’s title.

In your own words, what does “belonging” mean to you as a songwriter?

You can have a connection to things and people in many different ways. You don’t need to grip it every single time but you can feel this connection in one way or another. Some of these connections are passing, others last a whole life. So you see, ‘belonging’ can be interpreted in various ways. I have special bonds to my songs, they’re my little babies, I can feel it in my heart. “Allein unter Vielen” has a very special place in my heart.

How do you balance melancholic themes with pop accessibility?

That’s a nice question. In my opinion there is also beauty in grief. I think there are many people who like to listen to nice sounding music that also covers these topics. For me, that’s not a contradiction. So this balance kind of arises automatically. If my fans listen to my music and, you know, just let go when they cry, that’s one of the greatest compliments for me.

Can you explain the Dreamo style and how it shapes your songwriting?

‘Dreamo’ is just one of the terms that describe my music. It’s a combination from ‘dream’ and ’emotional’. It says that my songs are moony and filled with emotional deepness. When you listen to them, there is no need to action to be taken. You can just ‘be’ then. And I think that’s wonderful.

How important is vulnerability in your music, and why?

In my opinion, especially for men it’s still a taboo to talk about weaknesses. Or admitting them. Among other things, I’d like to show men that there’s no need to be ashamed to cry. To allow feelings. Recently I’ve read in the newspapers that there is a need for modern male role models for younger people. I think that’s true and maybe I may help out with that. That’s be so nice.

Did writing this track teach you anything new about yourself?

I don’t know if it taught me something new about myself, but I was able to process a situation where I was ‘alone among many’ myself! And that felt very healing.

What’s your approach to melody versus lyrics—do you prioritize one over the other?

I guess I like melodies a little more. Music is pure magic. Sounds cheesy and random, I know. But melodies are able to give you goosebumps. I love that feeling, I enjoy it when it happens! But of course, the lyrics are important as well! I’m somebody who really likes to listen to lyrics. What does the artist wanna tell me? What words did she/he choose?

How do you maintain authenticity while aiming for a broader audience?

I think I can just give the pure ‘me’ to the people. I mean every song that I write. Also, in my posts on social media, where I talk about mental health, toxic masculinity and so on, I always say my own opinion. And I’m not planning to change something about that. I can’t be everybody’s darling, that’s for sure. I just hope that my fans like what they see and hear.

Which production techniques or instruments were key in creating the intimate yet polished sound?

I guess you need to ask my producer ‘Sorgenkind’. I love working together with him. He understands my sound and what I want it to be in the end. We choose soft instruments and soft sound effects and plug-ins. I always want to create a safe space with my music, an intimate atmosphere. And when I sing, I’d like it to sound as I would whisper into the ears of my listeners. I think those are the keys.

Are there personal experiences in this track that fans might find surprising or unexpected?

Oh yes. The inspiration behind “Allein unter Vielen” came to me when I visited a songwriting camp in Unterfranken (Bavaria) last year. When I got there, it seemed to be that many of the other students already knew each other. I came there and I was alone, I felt kinda lost. Luckily, that was just the first moment, for like about one hour. After that, I had the time of my life there! It was so cool and inspiring to meet the coaches and all the other newcomer artists. But I remembered that feeling when I had my first moments there, after I arrived. I had to make a song out of that.

How does social media and fan interaction influence your creative process, if at all?

I don’t think it has an influence on my creative process. I don’t think about social media when I’m writing songs and I think that’s a good sign.

Do you have a favorite lyric or line from the song that resonates most with you?

This has to be ‘Will mich öffnen, doch die Worte fehlen, die Mauer steht zwischen euch und mir. Alle feiern, tanzen, leben, doch ich bin nur als Schatten hier’. It means that there is kind of an invisible wall between you and other people. You try to open up yourself, but you just can’t. Maybe because you’re missing the right words or you feel ashamed about yourself. I wanted to give this line to that strong feeling.

How do you envision your music evolving after this release?

It could be any direction, I guess. My next song ‘Kein Schmerz von dir’ (‘No pain from you’) (coming out March 20th!) will be a little different. Indie pop, no doubt! But it’s gonna be a bit more electronic and also danceable! Be excited for this bad boy!

If you could have listeners leave the song with one lasting feeling or thought, what would it be?

‘You know, in some way, everything is kind of fine’. When my fans get this feeling, I achieved my biggest goal.
