Isadore has always utilised music as a method to express herself. She finds inspiration in the rich histories of R&B and soul music. She has become a relevant voice for listeners on the sometimes daunting path of self-discovery thanks to her distinctive sound. She takes a step forward with “Hold Up,” embracing the joy and independence of being present in the moment.
We sat down with this talented music artist to learn more about what makes her tick, her approaches to the creative process and much more in this exclusive interview with TAGG!
“Hold Up” is a vibrant anthem of independence and empowerment. What inspired you to write this song, and how does it reflect where you are in your personal journey?
I wanted to capture moments in my life where I experienced happiness. “Hold Up” isn’t a reflection of all these moments, but moments where I’m out with my friends and we’re just having fun and enjoying the night. I wanted to have something that considered those moments since I usually write about moments of solitude.
Your music often explores introspective themes like mental health and relationships. How does “Hold Up” offer a different perspective from your previous work?
The key is blending both personal reflection and confidence. While introspection might focus on the challenges and growth from inter- and intrapersonal relationships or mental health struggles, “Hold Up” channels the result of that inner work: empowerment and freedom. It’s about celebrating the point where self-awareness leads to independence and joy. There’s a deeper layer of emotional resilience and self-acceptance, turning personal experience into a bold, uplifting song.
What was the creative process like for “Hold Up”? How did you and your producer come together to craft such a catchy and empowering sound?
Usually, my songwriting process includes creating a melody and then writing words to the melody. I write whatever the melody inspires. Then I’ll find a producer, play the a cappella version, and tell them what I want. We’ll work on creating a beat that fits the melody and the lyrics. The song was a lot more pop and upbeat than what I usually do so I wanted something that matched the vibe.
R&B, pop, and hip-hop are fused in this track. How do you navigate blending these genres while maintaining your distinctive voice?
Blending R&B, pop, and hip-hop allows me to explore different sounds while staying true to my voice. I navigate this by focusing on the emotions and messages I want to convey, then building the sound around that core. R&B gives me space for soulful expression, pop brings catchy hooks and energy, and hip-hop adds grit and rhythm.
As someone who has used music to express vulnerability, how does it feel to release a song that celebrates independence and living life on your own terms?
It feels great!
What does empowerment mean to you, both as a woman and as an artist, and how does “Hold Up” embody that message?
Empowerment, to me, means owning your voice, choices, and worth unapologetically, both as a woman and as an artist. It’s about staying true to yourself, setting boundaries, and embracing confidence in every aspect of life. “Hold Up” embodies that message by celebrating independence and self-assurance, reminding others that fulfilment comes from within, not external validation. It’s about reclaiming your space, enjoying life on your own terms, and surrounding yourself with those who uplift you. Through the track, I wanted to create a fun, energetic anthem that encourages everyone, especially women, to take control of their narrative.
Toronto has a rich music scene, especially in R&B. How has the city influenced your sound, and how does that influence come through in “Hold Up”?
Toronto has played a huge role in shaping my music and creative process. The city’s diversity, vibrant arts scene, and blend of cultures constantly inspire me. Toronto’s mix of R&B, hip-hop, and Caribbean sounds has pushed me to explore different genres, creating a unique fusion in my music. The hustle mentality of the city also drives me to work harder and stay authentic, reflecting personal growth, relationships, and mental health in my lyrics. The energy and multiculturalism here fuel both my sound and storytelling, making my music relatable and distinct.
You’ve talked about the complexities of modern relationships in your music. Does “Hold Up” signal a shift in how you approach relationships in your personal life as well?
The relationships I talk about in my music are mainly the ever-changing relationships I have with myself. “Hold Up” represents a different perspective on how I view myself and how I’d like to be perceived.
Summer anthems have a unique energy. What do you hope “Hold Up” brings to your listeners’ lives during these carefree nights?
I hope “Hold Up” brings a sense of joy, confidence, and freedom to my listeners’ lives, especially during those carefree summer nights. I want it to be the soundtrack to their moments of fun and independence—whether they’re out with friends, dancing, or just enjoying their own company. The song is all about living in the moment, embracing your worth, and feeling empowered to do what makes you happy. I want “Hold Up” to remind listeners to celebrate themselves and their freedom unapologetically.
As a rising star in the R&B scene, what do you hope to accomplish next after the release of “Hold Up”? Are there any new projects or collaborations on the horizon?
After the release of “Hold Up,” I’m excited to build on the momentum by working on new projects that dive deeper into my sound and message. Collaborations are also on the horizon—I’m eager to connect with other artists and producers who align with my vision, creating something fresh and meaningful. Expanding my live performances and growing my fanbase are top priorities, and I hope to continue pushing boundaries and making a lasting impact in the R&B scene.
