In what has been an extraordinary show of putting the nation second to their own internal political struggle the Liberal party has continued to lurch back and forth with all internal sections swaying and staggering from crisis to crisis.
No one has been able to keep up with the rapid changes. The PM declared that he would hold a second party vote and if there was a spill he would stand down and resign, but in the meantime he demanded to see the names on the petition which by all rights was meant to be a a secret ballot.
The signed petition that contained the signatures that were not just Dutton supporters but supporters of the other candidates and were delivered to the PM just before 11:30am.
In an additional unbelievable move, the Liberal Party Whips wererequired to make sure the signatures are legitimate. This suggests that the PM believes that the contenders for his position may resort to forgery!
The whips phoned all those who signed the petition to verify that they did indeed sign!
At 12:25 pm the meeting started and the spill motion was carried 45 – 40 so ending Turnbull’s Prime Ministership!
Yet it is noticeable that a substantial number being 40 members, still supported Turnbull and this might cause issues for the incoming PM.
In the end it was announced that the Liberal party decided, by what it is believed to be 45 – 40, that Scott Morrison will be the new Prime Minister until the forthcoming election.
Josh Frydenberg has been confirmed as Deputy PM by an absolute majority!
Just how well this decision involving Scott Morrison will be accepted by the electorate will be shown in possibly the next poll but certainly in the poll to follows the next, once the dust settles, if it settles!
It is almost guaranteed that there will be recriminations within the Liberal party, be they publicly or in privately spoken, as it is hard to believe that the extremist right wing of the party will accept the decision not to move to a more conservative base.
In a further move, information received suggests Tony Abbott’s sister, Christine Forster, is being encouraged to stand in the seat of Wentworth now Turnbull has resigned.
