From Local Basements to Global Stages: The Export Engine Behind NZ Music

Behind the Great Escape Focus Country announcement lies a deeper story: New Zealand’s increasingly sophisticated music export infrastructure. The collaboration between the New Zealand Music Commission and Live Nation New Zealand reflects a long-term strategy focused on artist development, international touring, and cultural visibility.

Alan Holt described The Great Escape as both a networking hub and a creative proving ground, pointing to past support for artists such as LEISURE, DARTZ, NO CIGAR, and Teeks. These incremental investments are now compounding into a more visible global footprint for Aotearoa artists.

Live Nation New Zealand’s Mark Kneebone emphasized the dual-directional nature of the initiative: not only exporting Kiwi talent but also importing international energy back into the local scene. This feedback loop has become increasingly important as touring ecosystems recover and evolve post-pandemic.

The 2026 Focus Country status suggests New Zealand is no longer simply “emerging” on the global stage—it is actively shaping how smaller markets can punch above their weight in the international festival economy.
