Acclaimed singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Fred Brown steps into the spotlight with “Distraction”, the title track from his forthcoming debut EP. Recorded at Louis Grace’s studio, home to projects with Mura Masa and kaeto, the single distils Brown’s understated artistry into a work of haunting intimacy.
Featuring Brown on drums, Joey Crouch on bass and engineering, and Henry Arrowsmith on piano, the track thrives on restraint. Muted guitar tones, delicate keys, and unhurried rhythms create a downtempo atmosphere where every note feels intentional. At the centre are Brown’s fragile, heartfelt vocals, carrying an emotional weight that lingers long after the song fades. The result is a soundscape as reminiscent of Elliott Smith’s raw vulnerability as it is of Duster’s lo-fi haze, Teethe’s delicate textures, or even Bon Iver’s early introspection.
Lyrically, “Distraction” strikes at the tension between self-doubt and quiet revelation. “The song is about seeing myself as a distraction for others around me,” Brown explains. “In both a positive and a negative way. Entertaining others distracts me from the bigger things inside—the things I want in life, and being afraid to try my hardest at them.” That confession underscores the track’s strength: it doesn’t just brood, it exposes.
“Distraction” distinguishes Brown as an artist with both technical skill and as a storyteller unafraid to bare his inner conflicts. With his debut EP on the horizon, he’s carving out a space for music that feels both deeply personal and quietly universal, songs that draw listeners in with their honesty, then leave them reflecting on their own unspoken truths.
