Rory Newman “Mirror Flame” EP Launch

June 13 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm AEST

I’m very excited to announce that I’ll be celebrating the release of my new EP “Mirror Flame” at Wesley Anne in Northcote on Friday June 13th! I’ll have a full band of amazing musicians to accompany me as well as the stellar Maeve Grieve opening the night! It’s shaping up to be a very special show, and I can’t wait to share these songs with you all in person. Doors will open at 8pm. Tix are $17.35 online (follow the link to the oztix website) or $20 at the door.
Rory Newman is a singer, songwriter and guitarist hailing from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, based in Naarm/Melbourne. Drawing from a wide array of influences, he blends intricate fingerstyle guitar and a rich baritone voice to create a vivid tapestry of sound. Rory brought out his second EP “Mirror Flame” in late 2024 and now celebrates its release with this one-off show at The Wesley Anne, backed by a full band featuring personnel from the EP and supported by Maeve Grieve.
Primarily recorded live at Collingwood’s Rolling Stock Recording Rooms and engineered, mixed and produced by Myles Mumford, the five tracks on the EP showcase an expansive, organic sound, weaving together elements of folk, country, blues and jazz to create a timeless, kaleidoscopic listening experience. Soulfully melodic and narrative driven, Mirror Flame exemplifies Rory’s thoughtful, poetic songwriting style, which draws broadly from the folk singer/songwriter tradition of the 60s and 70s. Traversing themes of longing, memory, love and mortality, each song tells a story that transcends time and place. Binding these stories together is Rory’s singular voice, oftentimes gentle and confessional, quietly inviting the listener into other worlds. Warm arrangements featuring lap steel guitar, double bass and piano are overlayed with shimmering synths and lush harmonies, evoking images of winding roads through open country, boundless skies and vast oceans.
Maeve Grieve is a Melbourne-based singer, songwriter, and guitarist who blends jazz, folk, and alternative rock into a captivating, genre-defying sound. Originally from Tasmania, her debut EP, Midnight Commute (2024), explores journeys, change, and longing through intricate guitar work and narrative-driven songwriting. Influenced by Madison Cunningham, Blake Mills, Fiona Apple, and Joni Mitchell, Maeve’s music is rich in texture yet accessible. A first-class graduate of the Jazz and Improvisation Honours program at The University of Melbourne, she has earned recognition at the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival, winning the 2023 New Frontiers Award and the 2024 LUMINA Composition Award.
