Phosphorescent, the project of acclaimed US singer-songwriter Matthew Houck, is returning to Australia for the first time in 11 years. Phosphorescent will be bringing his unique Americana sound to Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney in January 2025 and is joined by a very special guests Okkervil River, performed solo by frontman Will Sheff.
Known for tracks like “Song For Zula” and “Wolves”, Phosphorescent’s discography spans back to 2003 across eight studio albums. He will be kicking off 2024 on the East Coast of Australia, taking to The Triffid in Brisbane on 15 January, Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on 16 January and Factory Theatre in Sydney on 17 January.
Phosphorescent’s 2013 album Muchacho spent a week in the UK Top 75 Charts, now sitting at over 164 million Spotify streams. The 2024 release Revelator saw him confront his self-doubt and anxieties about the future whilst reclaiming a child-like wonder towards the world, praised by Aquarium Drunkard as “an album that transmutes the doubt and frustrations of the last few years into sounds that soar.”
An album of elegant gravity, Revelator captures some of the drastic life changes Houck experienced the past five years. Unfolding over nine songs, the underlying melancholy of Phosphorescent’s music remains, extending seamlessly from the stories begun in previous works Muchacho and C’est La Vie. Mastering his unique blend of rugged soundscapes and ethereal atmospherics, the earnest album wrestles with an ongoing, ambient sense of dread whilst looking to a new horizon.
Challenging his usual tendencies during the creative process and confronting his internal monologue of self doubt, Houck says, “This record is a lot more open-ended and ephemeral,”
“I like that the record restrains itself the entire time until the last song lays it all out there – I needed to have some strength, to not quit. I needed it to say, Yeah, we got this.”
Originally from Huntsville, Alabama and currently based in Nashville, Tennessee, Houck blends elements of country and indie rock to form his trademark brand of Americana. He has supported the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Father John Misty and The National as well as playing the world’s biggest music festivals including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and Outside Lands.
Navigating through existentialism, illness, addiction, fatherhood and marriage, Phosphorescent has always invited listeners to take a front row seat in the highs and lows of his life.
Joining Phosphorescent as support is Texan Okkervil River. Frontman and revered singer/songwriter Will Sheff is set to perform a special solo set of cherished Okkervil River tracks from the band’s career spanning catalogue with gems like “Lost Coastlines”, “Unless It Kicks”, “Westfall”, “For Real” and many more.
With high industry praise from folks like the New York Times, Rolling Stone and NPR, to admiring fans like Barack Obama and the late Lou Reed, Will Sheff has earned himself the reputation as one America’s greatest songwriters. Releasing nine studio albums to acclaim, Okkervil River has toured the globe selling out headline shows and performing sets on some of the world’s biggest festival stages including Coachella, Lollapalooza and more.
