MJC Presents: Hector Harley Quartet @ Jazzlab
July 21 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm AEST
Melbourne tenor saxophonist Hector Harley his bringing his new quartet to the Jazzlab for the very first time, performing two sets of original contemporary music accompanied by some of Melbourne’s most in demand musicians; James Bowers (piano), Monty Shnier (double bass) and Lewis Pierre (drum kit).
Hector combines strong melodies with subtle harmonic shifts to create a rich musical landscape, allowing soloists ample room to express their musicality whilst staying true to the essence of each piece. Hector’s quartet will be playing newly composed music which was born out of the introspective nature of composition and musical practice, as well as some select pieces from Hector’s first album “Mansfield” (2022). Unlike Mansfield, which explored the musical possibilities of a chordless quartet (trombone, tenor, double bass and drums), Hector’s new quartet will feature music specifically written for a chordal quartet and will be performing works inspired by luminaries such as Ben van Gelder, Joel Ross, and Kurt Rosenwinkle.
Personnel:
Tenor: Hector Harley
Piano: James Bowers
Double Bass: Monty Shnier
Drums: Lewis Pierre
This event will take place on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present, and acknowledge their ongoing struggle for recognition and sovereignty.
