Perth alt-rock outfit LATE 90s unveil their long-awaited sophomore EP Silk on Friday, May 2, a five-track coming-of-age journey exploring the chaos, clarity, and contradictions of young adulthood. Featuring previously released singles Intrepid, Don’t Blink, Metamorphosis, and Unbound, the EP’s focus track, Cruel, delivers the emotional gut-punch at the heart of the record.
Silk is threaded with themes of transformation, self-doubt, and resilience—tracing th••e path from emotional confusion to personal growth. “‘Cruel’ is a bit of an ode to a close friend who went through a rough time,” explains vocalist Zaac Morgan. “It’s about the frustration of battling mental illness, feeling like you can’t change who you are, even when you’re giving your all to life and relationships.” Influenced by Loathe, Deftones, and Citizen, Cruel dives deep into the turbulence of identity and inner conflict, while other tracks, like Metamorphosis, serve as a response—finding strength in honesty and self-acceptance.
Guitarist Stephen Loreck adds, “We discuss the whole concept of change a lot over the course of the EP—not wanting to, wanting to, being unable to—and then ultimately transforming into a better version of yourself. Realising, hey, I’m a little fucked up but I’m still here, and it’s time I start taking control of my life.”
The release of Silk comes hot on the heels of LATE 90s’ recent national tour, where they supported international heavyweights Neck Deep and State Champs, playing to packed venues across the country. Now, with momentum at their backs, the band is gearing up for a headline tour in July, bringing the EP to life on stages around Australia.
