Celebrating 20 Years of Thursday Jazz – with Fem Belling & Hector Harley

August 15 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm AEST

JAZZ: On Thursday, AUGUST 15, 2024, JMQ Jazz Ensemble celebrates 20 Years of weekly Thursday Jazz in Melbourne. And who better to lead the festivities than vibrant jazz singer-violinist, FEM BELLING with outstanding, upcoming tenor saxophonist, HECTOR HARLEY at the welcoming Golden Gate Hotel, South Melbourne at 7pm. Not to mention the all-star lone up with Tony Floyd, Michael Harding, Nick Haywood + John Montesante.
FEM burst onto the Melbourne Jazz Scene, after a sojourn in London, with her exquisite, versatile voice and powerful stage presence, lending authenticity, creativity and something extra special to jazz. A born performer from a musical family, Fem throws her own spin on jazz standards and paying homage to the Jazz Greats. She showcases her passion for scatting and her sheer joy of making music, with class, sophistication and diversity.
HECTOR Hector Harley is a Melbourne-based saxophonist and composer who has studied with many of the greats. He received the Marion Thomas Award for Excellence in 2018 whilst studying his Bachelor of Jazz and Improvisation at the VCA, as well as being a nominee for the Athenaeum Club Young Artist Trust Jazz Award in 2022 during his honours year. His inspirations were Dexter Gordon, Mark Turner, Michael Brecker, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock, and listening to them from a young age helped begin to shape his current sound. Tenor saxophone was not his first instrument, beginning on clarinet, progressing to alto, and then finally trying tenor. Since then the versatility and strength in tone of the tenor has made it his instrument of choice and chosen area of specialisation.
Doors + Dinner from 6:30pm. Live Jazz 7pm.
