Alcides Neto is a Brazilian guitarist, percussionist, drummer and vocalist based in Melbourne. Inspired by folk music from his home country, Alcides aims to present his perspective of Brazilian music, mixing traditional styles with Brazilian contemporary jazz. Alcides is noted by his distinctive percussive style of playing guitar, melding fingerstyle and articulate strumming techniques to achieve a dynamic, delicate and varied sound. The result is an organic and authentic style.
Perth drummer, Ben Vanderwal is much in demand for projects from many others such as Jamie Oehlers, Vanessa Perica, Julien Wilson, Harry Mitchell and others as well as leading his own groups such as My Name is Nobody. He’s also played with many visiting artists such as Charlie Haden when he came to Australia with his local version of the Liberation Music Orchestra.He’s developed a really unique approach to the drums and in this series explores some of his back catalogue as well as his influences that include drummers Frank Gibson Jnr, Marcus Gilmore ,Keith Carlock and Elvin Jones as well as other musicians such as John Scofield, Thelonious Monk, Bernie McGann, Vinicius Canturia and many others.
Stephen Hornby is a Melbourne based double bass player and composer who has been an active member of the local music scene for over 15 years. Stephen is heavily steeped in the jazz tradition however, possesses a deep love of all music, evident is his diverse musical output and collaborators. Original contemporary music is at the core of his musical practice, composing for and leading/ co-leading several groups including Koi Kingdom and The Faraway Trio as well as lending his bass playing talents to an array of bands and band leaders like Tulalah and Alcides Neto.
