Artist statement
“All my works reference nature in some way. Not in the sense of trees, plants, grasses, but in a more condensed way. I try to interpret what is around me. The marks and images operate on an interpretive level, condensing and blending observation, memory and imagination. The brush marks are part of the image and create an active surface.
Some of the paintings are based on the landscape of the high plains using an aerial view. I use lines and dots to reference trails and tracks that meander over the plains, trails that the cattle formed and which have been widened by the feet of the many bushwalkers who found the narrow cattle tracks too difficult to walk in. The colours reflect the abundant wildflowers which cover the fields after a good snow season.
Other paintings work on an intuitive level and with no image in mind I start with making various marks on the canvas and allow the shapes to develop.
I work primarily in acrylics because they dry quickly, allowing me to build up layers and develop depth and texture in my work.”
