It took a sip or two before I stopped analysing the wine and started to enjoy it.
Let me explain – Gamay has suffered the reputation of a low-quality wine, mostly because of damage Beaujolais nouveau did years ago!
Because of this, I feel a lot of people seem to overlook this wonderful grape, with Its high acidity and low sweetness.
When in fact Cru Beaujolais can be just as impressive as some red Burgundy wines at only a fraction of the price.
Nose: Rich dry fruit, black cherries, wrapped in rose petals some floral notes of violets after several hours in the decanter.
Mouth: Rather than a full-bodied Gamay, rich dry fruit, black cherries wash across the plate with a lifting succulent acidity rounding things out as the wine opens.
I encourage you to taste this wine and use it as an introduction to Gamay the wine of the Beaujolais region.
The 10 Crus of Beaujolais to look for – St-Amour, Juliénas, Chénas, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Régnié, Brouilly, and Côte de Brouilly. Each one has its own personality. Enjoy your Gamay journey as these wines offer serious enjoyment.
I went all out with this wine as I really did enjoy the acid, body and texture of this with; Braised duck breast & mushroom tart toped with caramelised onions.
100% Gamay, from 40-50-year-old vines at $50.00 I think this is a bargain well worth tracking down.
