Its Christmas day and I open The 1994 magnum of Chateau
Kirwan Margaux. I have been hanging on to this baby for a
while. So come Christmas day I pull the cork and joy for joy
the wine was sound, buy this I mean it was OK.
So the decanting begins double then triple followed by five
times from one decanter to another then left it for several
hours and I slowly sip the wine.
The wine was still restrained and not showing much on the
nose or the plate but still quite enjoyable drinking, cool dark
Cabernet fruit with little violet hints emerging, woven around
light cedar wood and blackcurrant fruit. The wine is closed
and not ready to show anything, so the stopper goes in until
tomorrow.
Day 2
Yes there is spice on the nose that was not there yesterday
a little ripe fruit has made an appearance drinking soft not a
lot of tannin although the bottle has thrown a good dark
crust on the inside. I must say there is a little fruit acid on
the back plate shinning through but still not the wine I had hoped for.
Day 3
It has taken 3 Days for this wine to open up and show what
she had to offer, The fruit was still cool and cold almost
earthy there was a sprinkle of spice from older wood.
With out to much fan-fair the wine was an experience worth
the wait.
However having said that I believe this bottle wine was in its
prime and not over the hill. Just not as exciting as I was
expecting and to my mind would have showed better had I
opened at least four years earlier.
Never the less, I still drank the wine with a full roast
Christmas lunch, you need solid food with an ageing
Bordeaux like this to bring out its best.
Then I continued to drink this wine with lunch for the next
two days I might add.

I did have back up wine on hand over the 3 days it took for
the French beast to show its self. By then Christmas lunch
had lost its allure.
Reckon I will have a Barolo next year, an 2008 a nice little 9
year old; Open it the night before, should do the trick…
None of this 22 years old Bordeaux and 3 days to open up
and show its self for the glamourise slow moving old girl she
was.
