Hello,

UNCLE VANYA has it’s first preview tomorrow and the whole building is alive with anticipation. It feels special in here, even our tiny backstage area is abuzz with energy from our (larger than normal) cast.

We rarely do classics at Red Stitch, instead opting for contemporary writing from Australia and overseas. So this new but loyal version by Annie Baker, one of our favourite international playwrights, is an exception to the rule. As a company we have a close relationship with Baker’s work, having previously introduced Australian audiences to her writing (The Aliens and The Flick). Nadia Tass directed our previous two Baker productions, so we’re thrilled to have her back at the helm.

Our resident, red-headed Russian, Olga Makeeva, (originally hailing from Moscow), has advocated for a Red Stitch production of Chekhov for years. Olga is joined by former Artistic Director and original ensemble member David Whiteley alongside 2016 graduate Eva Seymour, our youngest member. Its a delight to see this span of the company working together onstage. Rosie Lockhart and Ben Prendergast return after some time off, and we are thrilled to welcome brilliant guest actors Marta Kaczmarek, Kristof Kaczmarek and Justin Hosking rounding off the cast of this timeless, sad comedy.

I can’t wait to share a very special night at the theatre with you.

It’s been a busy few weeks with UNCLE VANYA rehearsals in full swing, SUNSHINE packing out houses and finalising our 2017 Season. Next year is looking full of remarkable, riveting new plays that we cannot wait to announce. We would love to see you at the launch on November 28th to celebrate! Save the date in your diaries now.

The UNCLE VANYA cast, creatives and crew are deep in rehearsals. We’re already so excited about the work they’re creating and this special adaptation by Annie Baker. Director, Nadia Tass is no stranger to Annie Baker’s oeuvre, having directed our acclaimed productions of The Flick and The Aliens.

Baker set out to adapt this beloved classic with the “goal of creating a version that sounds to our contemporary American ears the way the play sounded to Russian ears during the play’s first productions in the provinces in 1898”.

When did you first realise you wanted to become a playwright and why?

I would argue that becoming a playwright is never done with much level of thought. That’s how we end up in this mess, after all. I mean who would seriously set out to do something so stupid?

I’ve always been more a team sport person than an individual sport person. That’s what I love about theatre… It takes a team to make it work. I guess I just accidentally found myself taking the least teamy job in the change rooms.

One of the things I’ve loved most about being a playwright is the huge range of people you get to meet. Whether it has been survivors of massacres, former child migrants who have grown up with no family (but still find a way to live life with a smile on their face), actors I’ve grown up idolising who turn out to be funny, charming souls… The people I have got to meet have made my life full, and that makes playwriting a brilliant choice.

You have a unique style of writing in Sunshine. How did you develop this?

I wanted to try to create an experience for an audience that they can’t get from a movie screen or a tv or computer screen. I wanted to try to give them something they may only be able to experience in the theatre, because that’s what going to the theatre should be like… Like nothing else. Whether I’ve succeeded or failed is yet to be seen!

How have you found developing this work with the Red Stitch Ensemble?

That bunch of hacks? I’ll never work with them. Never! If you think a company is good, you work with them again and again, right? Well, to show you what I think of Red Stitch; I declare that I have never, will never, and hope to never ever work with them. I couldn’t think of anything worse.

What else are you working on?

Why are you asking? Do you want to steal my ideas? I bet you do. It would be just like you. Well, if that’s the case… I’m doing a new stage version of Hey Dad..! which I’m creating with Chunky Move dance company and the German heavy metal band Rammstein, I’m ghostwriting a nude one-man show for Derryn Hinch called ‘Got A Hinch?’ and I’m working on a a piece of documentary theatre which is a 365 hour opera called ‘A Year In The Life Of The City Of Devonport, 1989’.

Steal those ideas. I dare you.

Two sisters prepare themselves for society. One punch at a time.

Three acclaimed theatre makers, Susie Dee, Kate Sherman and Nicci Wilks come together to present the world premiere of Animal, an unflinching examination of violence and violence against women.

Animal is a dark horror, a minute tale of epic proportions. In a remote town, two sisters hover on the edge of society. Unable to withstand their circumstance any longer they begin a relentless quest to prepare for the outside world. Through heightened physicality and visceral splendour, Animal explores the circumstance we are born into and the cycle of violence.

The debut production from inFlux, Animal looks at what we don’t like to see, or perhaps choose to ignore, and asks the question: how do women respond to a world that celebrates the brutishness of men?

Formed in 2009 by Dee, Sherman and Wilks, inFlux was born out of the collective desire to present work that is bold, unafraid and reveals humanity with all of its complexities and ugliness. For the past decade Susie Dee has developed new work with writers such as Angus Cerini, Declan Greene, Melissa Reeves and Patricia Cornelius. In 2013 Susie won a Green Room Award for her direction of Patricia Cornelius’ award-winning play Savages and in 2015 directed SHIT by Patricia at the NEON Independent Festival for MTC which took home 4 Green Room Awards.

Nicci Wilks was Assistant Director and performer for the Green Room Award winning show Taxi by Dee & Cornelius, co-creator of the highly acclaimed show The Long Pigs, with Susie Dee, and performer in Dees critically acclaimed production of SHIT by Patricia Cornelius, while Kate Sherman has collaborated on works Genius (Festival of Live Art), Under Different Circumstances (Performance Space), The Perfect Boy Redux – Imaginarium (The Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery), Once Under A Sky (Old Fitz Theatre) and worked with companies such as STC (Macbeth), Belvoir (Ruby’s Wish), Legs On The Wall (Beyond Belief, My Bicycle Loves You).

Hello,

SUNSHINE moves in to the building this week and as is to be expected, I am practically living at the theatre.

I consider it a great privilege to be a part of Tom Holloway’s extraordinary new play, and I have wanted to work with director Kirsten von Bibra for years. The cast members I get to share the stage with are brilliant. We can’t wait to bring this story to you.

When we began, Tom warned us that we would grow to hate him by week 3 of rehearsals because of how hard the script is to learn. At the time everyone laughed. However, I think if I didn’t have the bank of admiration and fondness for him that I do; it might be a real risk! Sunshine is fiendishly difficult to put together but an absolute gift.

And I am certain it will be an exhilarating experience for audiences.

It’s exciting being in the theatre tonight with the design team doing their thing – Matt Adey on set and lights and Elizabeth Drake on composition. These two last worked together, with Kirsten, on our production of Grounded. They are great artists and I can feel the magic building around me as I write.

I’m going to get back to working on the play and I can’t wait to see you in the foyer after the show from next week!

Jewish International Film Festival 2016

We are partnering up with the Jewish International Film Festival to bring you a special performance and insight into the life of one of America’s greatest playwrights, Arthur Miller.

Ensemble member Sarah Sutherland (Detroit) and guest actor Paul Henri (About Tommy) will perform a scene from Miller’s Broken Glass prior to a screening of Arthur Miller: Man of the Century. This is a one-off event at the Classic Cinema in Elsternwick, October 31st, 6:45pm.

JIFF is the home of the most comprehensive range of Israeli and Jewish-themed films in Australia and New Zealand. The films premiere in a annual three-week film festival in November. JIFF is building on the long and proud 26-year history of Jewish film festivals in Australia. The festival runs in Melbourne from October 27th – November 23rd.

Acclaimed playwright and director Mark Wilson brings ANTI-HAMLET, his wild, boundary bending reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic to Theatre Works for its world premiere in November.

An International Fellow of Shakespeare’s Globe in London, Wilson’s work explores present socio-political realities, often through a connection to classical text, with ANTI-HAMLET the culmination of his trilogy of radical excavations of The Bard’s iconic plays – after Richard II and Unsex Me.

Using Shakespeare’s characters as the scaffold for a raucous and ruthless excavation of Australia’s cultural and political maze, ANTI-HAMLET begins with a Hamlet who doesn’t want to be Hamlet, a Prince who wants to be anything but.

His dad’s dead, his mother wants a grandchild and his therapist is the father of psychoanalysis. And as the monarchy teeters on the edge of destruction, a new leader has taken the stage with visions of a prosperous Denmark committed to freedom, the individual and the market. Stuck in a cycle of self-obsession and serial procrastination, will the weight of History itself be enough to make Hamlet wake up, grow and stand up?

ANTI-HAMLET will bring together an extraordinary cast including Brian Lipson, Natasha Herbert, Marco Chiappi and Natascha Flowers, alongsideWilson himself, to take on Freud, Turnbull, public relations and colonialism.

Speaking about the production Mark Wilson said, “ANTI-HAMLET takes Shakespeare’s original and puts it in the blender with contemporary Australia: what we’ve inherited and what our ambitions are. It also is a great vehicle for extraordinary performances from some of my favourite actors, and working with them is one of the most exciting parts of this project.

“Playing opposite Natasha Herbert as my mother and Brian Lipson as Sigmund Freud is a theatrical dream come true–and it will be a real treat for the audience to see these great actors going to extremes.

New Working Group is a network of eleven independent theatre artists, writers, directors and designers committed to making theatre that is intelligent, diverse, entertaining and pro-risk. Group members include Amelia Lever-Davidson, Bridget Balodis, Dan Giovannoni, Emilie Collyer, Eugyeene Teh, Felix Ching Ching Ho, Louris van de Geer, Luke Kerridge, Mark Pritchard, Mark Wilson, and Michele Lee.

The Company’s past productions include: Dream Home which was shortlisted for the Patrick White Award in 2012; Triumph, about a fake victim who becomes a hero in the wake of a terrorist attack; and Ground Control, a futuristic experimental comedy about violence, the technological singularity and long distance relationships in the 2016 Next Wave program.

The first of Wilson’s trilogy, Richard II, explored the recent political dramas of federal Australian politics, with an eye on personality and gender politics, whileUnsex Me, a drag show remix of Lady Macbeth, was packed with whispered confessions and booming self-mockery. With ANTI-HAMLET, Wilson continues his bold deconstruction of the canon.

“The show is parody, it’s tragedy, it’s satire, it’s filled with ideas and a collision of characters, situations, things taken to the extreme. Hell, Sigmund Freud is a character and there’s a scene between Hamlet and his mother called ‘the closet scene’ – we’re gonna have some fun,” said Wilson.
