Meet Cass The Wary, a genre-blending rapper hailing from the bush whose music fuses the raw energy of 90s boom bap with the intensity of heavy metal. On stage, Cass commands attention with a powerful presence and visceral delivery, while offstage reveals a more laid-back, introspective side—content to unwind with a joint or two to the sounds of Culture of Kings or João Gilberto in a quiet backroom. Cass also occasionally showcases their skills on jazz piano. Dive into this written interview to discover more about the artist behind the music.
If you could pinpoint the first chapter of your music story, what would it sound like?
Got to Melbourne and a mate put me onto a hip hop jam in Thornbury, rap open mic at Shotkickers called ‘Don’t Sweat The Technique’ or DSTT. Finished cutting my teeth as a rapper there and have since branched out into the wider burn scene. To this day I still have people stopping me in the most random places to be like “You’re that rapper from Shotkickers!”
It’s nice to feel like someones favourite NPC tho it’s like I’m a real part of the city hahaha
What elements or influences make your sound uniquely yours?
Fam I used to go to my neighbours house and we’d smoke weed till we could percieve quarks with the naked eye then drown ourselves in riffs, he was always drving reaper though so I got to pocket his tricks and take em home yaknow, now when I’m makin hiphop I’m fully just doing it through a quasi metal lense shit comes off the belt all grunge I love it.
Always got dj’s and producers commentin after my sets about how there’s a signature sound through all my tracks and they always claim it’s the bass guitar tone/approach and they’re 100% right also I put the Sausage Fattener plugin on literally everything and saturate it to hell and back, I take a pretty experimentally superstitious approach to production that’s less about core competency and more about doing weird techno-seances with the machine spirit inside my audio interface.
Can you walk us through how one of your recent tracks came to life?
Ripped like 3-5 cones, pulled up the Animal Farm template in reaper, blacked out, came to as my hands packed a fresh bowl and heard things starting to peak so i muttered a quick prayer and increased the gain before losing conciousness again, by the time my brain reconnected with my vision there was a verse and a chorus that had no right going together harmonically so I gave myself a pat on the back, ripped another 2 cones and added a kind of muted metal breakdown before passing back into the green ethereal again
Let it simmer for a few days to a week then added more cones and some vocals, bingo bango bongo no golfo Break of Day was born and uploaded with barely a momeents notice.
Who would you love to collaborate with one day?
Someone who can match my energy. To be honest every day I fantasise about meeting someone who’s wayyy smarter for music than me who’s also really hot and then we fall in love and spend the rest of our days happily collaborating together and making albums in the bush while we smoke weed and observe a small population of indoor cats until we both die of old age ya know.
What’s been your proudest moment so far this year?
Greeley said he thinks I’m pretty cool.
What’s next for you? Any big dreams or goals you’re chasing?
Literally just wanna do one of those breaknbread mikkis place vids or something similar.
What’s one thing about you, as a person or artist, that your listeners might be surprised to learn?
three things: 1- I can throat sing, 2- despite all accusations, I do not hold any professional qualifications as a masseuse and also 3- the only two things in the universe that truly scare me are actual Cassowary’s and also Ton 618 fuck that thing to hell and back it’s too spooky.
