Join in now to delve into the world of Cammi Kol, exploring her journey, her music, and the messages that resonate within her work.

You started vocal training at the age of 5 – how did those early experiences shape your musical identity today?

I’d say my earlier experiences in singing have encouraged me to develop my confidence, self-worth, and my empathy. Since an early age, my vocal teachers would always ask me to appeal to the emotion in a song and then to mimic that through my voice. My understanding of music was framed around vulnerability and compassion, which no doubt, has given me an advantage in lyric writing.

Growing up in Melbourne, how did the city’s culture influence your artistic development?

Melbourne has played a vital and pivotal role in my artistic development. I was given the opportunity to study at the Australian Institute of Music and discover my passion away from general schooling. As an artist, I feel the city has rewarded me in many ways, including; gig and live performance opportunities, diversity and integrity in inclusivity, an abundance of artistic inspiration, and finding a musical community that has encouraged my growth as an artist. Melbourne is a beautiful and multicultural hub that I feel blessed to be involved with.

Your music often blends vibrant soundscapes with emotional depth. Who or what are your biggest inspirations in both sound and message?

My biggest inspirations would be artists such as Chris Cornell, Freddie Mercury, Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, and Steven Wilson. Each of them have a unique way of creating music that has left a lasting impression on my own involvement in songwriting.

You’ve said that collaboration helped you shed roles and identities. Can you elaborate on what that process looked like while working on ‘Feel’ with Vince Stillner?

The process of writing ‘Feel’ was effortless and easy. Vince had asked me whether I had any ideas for a track he’d been sitting on for years. I had a listen and started drafting up some ideas. Within a day or two, we had finalised the song and Vince was adamant that we record the vocals before I head back to Australia. It was a wonderfully supportive and creative environment. I felt very comfortable writing with Vince.

‘Feel’ is described as a departure from your usual style. What elements make this track different for you, both lyrically and sonically?

Lyrically, there was more of a rhythmic focus, where the song was written with an electronic beat pulsing through. There was also a more pop-centred approach taken, with a focus on catchy melodies and hooks. Sonically, elements that made this song different to what I usually work on were its focus on electronic instruments and programmed drums.

Much of your work is rooted in honest storytelling. What story or feeling are you mostly trying to convey through your music?

I am mostly trying to convey authenticity and vulnerability through my storytelling, which in turn allows me to heal and move through difficult emotions. My goal with writing music is to allow others to open their hearts and minds, and encourage deeper reflection.

With ‘Feel’ being a stylistic shift, can we expect more experimentation in your upcoming projects?

Absolutely. I’m open to many different styles and genres, and I’d love to explore more about music in any way that I can.

Are there any upcoming collaborations or performances you’re especially excited about?

I was very excited to play for Sanny Veloo’s single launch at the Bergy Bandroom on the 31st of May. Also featured on the line-up were Danger Den and Man vs. Synth. I hadn’t played with my band since the previous December, so I was thrilled to get back into the swing of things.
