Young Children Helping to Save Lives

Victoria’s triple zero service is urging parents and carers to include children as young as three and four-years of age in their safety plans, including teaching them how to call 000 in a life-threatening emergency says ESTA the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority.
ESTA’s CEO Julia Oxley said it’s important for children to take an active role in their own safety and have information about what to do in an emergency and when to call triple zero.

“Knowing how to call triple zero can reduce anxiety felt by children when faced with a safety or emergency situation,” she said. “It is also extremely important to teach your little ones to say their address. Our expert operators can get police, fire or ambulance help on the way when we know where they are.”

Triple zero gets hundreds of calls each year from young Victorians, some as young as three years old. Families can practice when and how to call 000 with the online simulation game at http://kids.triplezero.gov.au/

“We tell parents and carers the life a child might save could be yours,” Ms Oxley said.

ESTA provides the critical link between the Victorian community and the state’s emergency services agencies. It provides Victoria’s 24-hour emergency call-taking and dispatch services for police, fire, ambulance and for the VICSES storm and flood line 132 500 .

ESTA takes more than 2.4 million calls for assistance a year; on average a call every 12 seconds. Always call triple zero if there is a threat to life or property.

Do Weekends & Holidays Make You Sick?

I just read an article titled: “DO WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS MAKE YOU SICK?” on the Boots WebMD website.

This section jumped out at me:

“…It is absolutely a biological process. When you are busy at work, your body just needs to get things done so it overrides everything else…It’s when you stop that the problems start… you should build relaxation into your everyday working life… grab small segments of relaxation throughout the day… you’ll notice a big difference within days.”

A few years back we created an AUDIO CD titled “The Beach HOLIDAY @ YOUR DESK” to help busy people do as the article suggests: ‘grab small segments of relaxation throughout the day’.

It was inspired by a series of ‘De-Stress / Meditation’ workshops I was running at the Crown Casino Health & Fitness Centre here in Melbourne where people from surrounding offices were coming across during their lunch hour and I was showing them simple, quick techniques to help them deal with the overload so many of them admitted to feeling. The idea for this ‘beach’ CD happened after I took in some natural wave sounds I had recorded at Point Leo and everyone said it helped them get into the relaxation ‘zone’.

Like most things that are good for us, the whole point with learning to take regular breaks is to get started, set up a simple easy-to-do schedule, keep going and get better at it. Then, when you do give yourself permission to stop, you reduce the possibility of falling into any melt-down like the article suggests happens to so many busy people when they suddenly stop.

‘The Beach HOLIDAY @ YOUR DESK’ is now up on CDBaby so it can be downloaded one track at a time – OR – downloaded as the complete set. If you’d like to hear how it works you can check out the FREE SAMPLES at this LINK: (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/positivesigns ).

OR, if you prefer to have the ‘hard copy’ CD itself, you can visit our website and order it there.

Enjoy.

Reefer Madness

Chapel Off Chapel
25 November – 4 December 2016

Anti-drug propaganda film turned musical satire, Reefer Madness parodies the anti-marijuana attitudes of the 1930s. Wholesome couple Jimmy Harper and Mary Lane fall into the evil clutches of the devil’s lettuce in this cautionary tale, promising that “reefer will turn your children into hooligans and whores.” From selling babies to domestic abuse and hit-and-run murders, nothing is off-limits in this irreverent satire.

Charmingly kitsch, RL Productions steer the production far from realism with hand-drawn props, comically exaggerated simulated sex scenes and caricaturised depictions of violence. From a mannequin’s head thrown on stage following an emphatic decapitation to reams of red ribbons indicating blood streams, Stephen Wheat’s melodramatic directorial choices soften the gore and boundary-pushing humour.

Ben Adams is an unending fount of energy whose strong vocals and perfectly awkward performance as love-struck Jimmy Harper is a show highlight. Co-star Grace O’Donnell-Clancy as Mary Lane is an endearingly peppy, pint-sized powerhouse.

Ed Deganos’ campy Jesus is another incontestable highlight. Wheeled around on a wooden cross amidst choruses of ‘listen to Jesus, Jimmy,’ Deganos’ performance under Wheat’s direction captures the comical irreverence of this cult classic.

Rosa McCarty’s comic timing as reefer den hostess Mae alongside ruthless proprietor Jack Stone (Jared Bryan) draws consistent laughs. McCarty also impresses with strong vocals.

Some brief microphone issues, a near costume mishap in the five and dime Latin-esque dance interlude, and some poorly hidden wig lines are the only apparent flaws. Fortunately these flaws enhance the B-grade Rocky Horror Picture Show-esque cult classic spirit that Wheat manages to capture in RL Productions’ Melbourne premiere of Reefer Madness.

Tripod Christmas Turkeys – Two big nights of Tripod at MEMO Music Hall – Friday 9 and Saturday 10 December  – 8pm

Christmas. We can’t avoid it. Not saying we want to. Well, sometimes we might. But it’s not going anywhere. Therefore, let’s hear some songs about it. Specifically, let’s hear Tripod poke their harmony-laden musical sticks at Christmas this year.

They might even stealthily make you feel Christmassy.

Since their earliest shows Tripod have made a consistent habit of juggling comedy, music and narrative in endless exhilarating combinations, consistently evading neat definitions whilst always striving to stay worthy of their fans’ time.

Tripod continue to bring an insane level of craft in both comedy and music and combine them in a rich and satisfying way – an ability that has cemented them as a much loved cultural fixture in Australia.

Xmas Turkeys promises to be a hilarious mix of suburban whimsy and dark satire, the perfect Christmas gift for those that love or hate Christmas and everything in between.

“…there’s hardly time to catch your breath in between bouts of uncontrollable laughter… these guys are unbelievable musicians too. Sometimes five stars just aren’t enough” The Scotsman, Edinburgh

Life
I am the magician
With my staff and sword.
I wield towards
A knowing end,
But along the journey
Be loving and gentle,
Until shadows reveal
A mirror of self.
An imaginary shadow
Of living and life lived,
Etched upon the world.
It’s message is there
And everywhere
Never to be erased, as all
Who have come before
Have etched their lives
On the curtain of the
Universal wall.

Legendary Melbourne rockers’ first two albums now available on vinyl, CD and digitally with bonus tracks.

Sydney headline show SOLD OUT. 2nd announced and selling fast.

With special guests Bloods + Wild Honey

Following the announcement that one of Australia’s most successful rock bands of all time, JET, are reforming to hit the road with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in February 2017, the band have reissued their first two albums ‘Get Born’ and ‘Shine On’ on vinyl, CD and digitally. Both the CD and digital reissues come with rare previously unreleased digitally re-mastered recordings from each period.

Of the reissues and bonus tracks, drummer, vocalist and song writer Chris Cester says:

“We’d sit around on beer crates in our early days at first the pub we played at making our first moves. Nic always used to say if the song is good you can do anything with it. This was a wild time, and a really creative period. These demo recordings and b-sides were lost for years but then re-appeared down the line somehow. I love these songs dearly, even the unfinished ones.”

In addition to the Bruce Springsteen tour, JET will also play two very special headline shows in Sydney at Taronga Zoo. With the first show selling out in record time, a second show is now on sale and selling fast.

JET quickly conquered the world after forming in 2001, selling more than 6.5 million albums globally and securing 10 x Platinum certification in Australia and Platinum in the USA and UK for their 2003 debut album Get Born. The album produced a string of classic singles in Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Rollover DJ, and Look What You’ve Done and netted the band 6 x 2004 ARIA awards. Both “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” and “Cold Hard Bitch” peaked at number 1 on the US Modern Rock singles charts and propelled the band to the top of festival bills and charts around the world.

In 2006 Jet were named APRA’s Songwriters of The Year and for three years running Are You Gonna Be My Girl was the most performed Australian song overseas.

JET’s follow up album “Shine On” followed in 2006 and was rammed full of another collection melodic rockers including Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, Bring It On Back and Rip It Up, and achieved platinum status in Australia on the back of stand-out headline shows around the world, and an unforgettable Big Day Out run in 2007.

UK production of Trainspotting to open at Fortyfivedownstairs 22 March – 13 April 2017

trainspotting

Based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, adapted by Harry Gibson Directed by Adam Spreadbury-Maher

Tickets on sale on Tuesday 29 November Sex, drugs and 80s trance. Trainspotting Live will immerse you into Irvine Welsh’s drug fuelled modern classic as it bursts into life at Fortyfivedownstairs in March 2017

Following sold out and extended seasons in the United Kingdom, Andrew Kay and Associates present the King’s Head Theatre and an In Your Face production of Irvine Welsh’s cult, generation-defining novel Trainspotting.

This adrenalin filled production recaptures the controversy of the famous novel and globally successful film, and repackages it into a totally immersive production to portray the underground drug scene in a smacked-out Edinburgh. Kicking off with a rave complete with strobe lighting and glow-sticks, audiences are given a no-holds-barred, close-up view of the lives of Renton, Begbie and Sickboy as they are thrown head first into a world of hedonism and the bleak reality of heroin addiction.

“I was shocked… and I wrote the f*cking thing!” Irvine Welsh Choose us. Choose life. Choose mortgage payments; choose washing machines; choose cars; choose sitting on a couch watching mind-numbing and spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing f*ckin junk food intae yir mooth. Choose rotting away, pushing and shiteing yersel in a home, a total f*ckin embarrassment tae the selfish, f*cked-up brats ye’ve produced. Choose life. Harry Gibson’s original stage adaptation, written before it became the famous blockbuster film, was instantly successful and controversial, and won the Sunday Times Award for Best New Play.

For this 21st anniversary production, In Your Face Theatre’s have created a snappy and vibrant affirmation of the power and humour of the piece. This all Scottish cast features Rachael Anderson (June), Chris Dennis (Begbie), Calum Barbour (Mother Superior), Greg Esplin (Tommy), Michael Lockerbie (Sickboy), Erin Marshall (Alison) and Gavin Ross (Renton).

Director Adam Spreadbury Maher was born in Australia and now lives in London. He is the Artistic Director of the King’s Head Theatre in Islington and founding Artistic Director of OperaUpClose.

Previous directing work includes: A Tale of Two Cities (King’s Head & Australia), Dead Party Animals (Hope Theatre), Studies For A Portrait (White Bear), The York Realist and The Sleepers Den (Riverside Studios), Hannie Rayson’s Hotel Sorrento And in Australia Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing and Joe Orton’s Loot.

“Brutally honest, unfiltered, heart wrenching, this production will make you uncomfortable, in the best of ways.” Edinburgh Evening news ★★★★★

“Trainspotting’ offers some of the most arresting, exhilarating theatre you’ll probably see in years.” Three Weeks★★★★★
