Australia Ensemble Guilty Pleasures

We all have our musical guilty pleasures and this program serves up some juicy indulgences. Our final concert for 2019 also provides reason again to perform an Australia Ensemble favourite commission, Guilty Pleasures by John Peterson. In recapping the theme of Cool Fire, this octet contrasts polarities. We let our hair down in a selection of Tangos by Brazilian composer Ernesto Júlio de Nazareth, arranged by our own Ian Munro. Schoenberg may seem an odd choice in a program of such fervency, but in this early work, Ein Stelldichein (A Rendezvous), we hear a decadent, over-ripe, late Romanticism. Concluding the year is Brahms’ sprightly, youthful Serenade no. 1 in D for a large ensemble of winds and strings. Fitting for a season closer, we jubilantly invite you to join us for a glass of bubbles afterwards!

Australia Ensemble Artistic Chair, Paul Stanhope hosts the 2019 series of Composer Conversations, to which he has invited featured Australian composers in for a chat. These intimate and engaging discussions are free and open to all, with time for questions. This is an opportunity to learn more about being a composer and about a particular work before you hear it live in concert! This is your chance to hear all about writing chamber music, straight from the composers themselves. The Composer Conversations will be held in the newly renovated Clancy Auditorium foyer, beginning at 7pm and concluding by 7.45pm in good time for the start of the subscription concert at 8pm.

John Peterson, on Saturday October 12, 7pm, to talk about his work Guilty Pleasures, written for the Australia Ensemble in 2007
