Artists & Entrepreneurs Recap

Nobody Takes More Risks Than an Artist or an Entrepreneur

Written by Jessica Fernandez

Thursday 21st March saw the much anticipated event “Artist and Entrepreneurs” take place. CoWork Me welcomed 70+ attendees to share their artistic and entrepreneurial experiences and reveal how much we share in common.

Guests were entertained by local musicians Niko & Sone who played in the CoWork Me courtyard, and many attendees said that they were able to hear them from St Kilda Rd as they were getting out of their cars.

The CoWork Me building was abuzz with both industry creatives and entrepreneurs eager to network and make new connections before the panel began. This networking portion of the night was enhanced by a grazing table that Just Graze Melbourne put on to feed attendees, coupled with plenty of alcohol provided by Urban Alley, wine from Cellar d’or as well as ciders sponsored by Finance Websites Australia.

Yarra, an Indigenous Australian artist, opened the formal part of the evening with an incredibly moving Welcome to Country. This set the tone for the duration of the panel where Chris Mulchay, CoWork Me’s Entrepreneur in Residence invited Tottie Goldsmith, Blake McIntyre and Yarra to discuss what it means to be an artist or an entrepreneur today.

One of the key themes of the evening was fear. One of the panellists described fear as our ego getting the better of us. This resonated highly with the audience as being an entrepreneur is like gambling, you gamble your money, time and life when starting a business or creating an idea.

This is why we should lean on like minded people who are in the same position. The panel agreed that we each hold a puzzle piece and are better when we are all together as one.

Tottie, from the high profile Goldsmith family, discussed what it’s like to be a female artist and how her motives changed throughout her life. In particular she discussed balancing her role as a mother as well as her passion for art and acting.

Once the panel concluded, guests were invited to continue chatting and exchange ideas whilst listening to the musicians before heading off to the after party at The Espy.

The atmosphere and vibe of the event was exciting. We have had plenty of positive feedback and we know that this event will be the first of many and are looking forward to seeing you at our next event.
